JetBlue Airways’ founder David Neeleman has hired Lukas Johnson, who chose routes and set pricing for Allegiant Air until he left in May, to lead commercial strategy for his new U.S. airline, which could begin flying as soon as 2021. Johnson, 36, joined Neeleman about three weeks ago, after working briefly as CEO of Jetlines, a proposed Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier.

During this time last year Thomas Cook CEO Peter Fankhauser was in an ebullient mood. He had presided over a “milestone” year with profit up, debt cut and another dividend for shareholders. “I strongly believe that our focus on customers, quality and service is key to our success, positioning us to deliver long-term sustainable profitable growth,” he said at the time.

Carnival Corp. CEO Arnold Donald devoted the first several minutes of his company’s fourth-quarter earnings call to the achievement of a goal set five years ago. But it’s the future that really has investors worried, sending shares down more than 9 percent by Thursday afternoon. The world’s largest cruise company said its yields — a measure of how much passengers spend per day — were expected to be flat compared to the prior year in the first quarter of 2019.

The main emphasis of Ctrip’s business is short-haul outbound trips so the impact of the U.S.-China dispute over tariffs is limited, co-founder and executive chairmanJames Jianzhang Liang told Skift. “Obviously, in the long-run, it will hurt the global economy and global prosperity,” Liang said. Skift spoke to Liang recently in Shanghai at the company’s annual partner event, which on December 10 marked thetravel booking site’s 15 years as a public company.

As hotel companies become more serious about wellness beyond spa offerings and healthy menus, many are creating new positions for executives specializing in the field. Hyatt is one of the pioneers and in August brought onboard Mia Kyricos, who joined as its first senior vice president, global head of well-being, responsible for developing strategies for guest and employee well-being.

WestJet Airlines’ new ultra low-cost carrier Swoop descended into the market on June 20, bringing an unbundled business model to a country where new entrants typically have had a hard time breaking in. However, the carrier is banking that its executive team, as well as backing from parent company WestJet and a focus on technology, will set it apart from past failures and current competition.

Southeast Asia’s budget accommodation sector has been under the long shadow of China and India. Strange, because the hotel space in Southeast Asia is three times as big as India’s, and dotted with invisible, non-classified hotels waiting to be spruced up, branded, and redistributed efficiently. Maybe existing players prefer that they stay in the shadows. But that won’t be for long as Oyo marches into the region.
