Captain Dave and Larry the Lobster follow an invitation from an old friend, Marina the Mermaid, deep into the kelp forest off French Creek Harbour on Vancouver Island’s coast. In this gentle underwater adventure, kids will meet a giant Pacific octopus, a garden of sea anemones, and glowing plankton that make Marina’s family cave feel like a room full of tiny stars. Along the way, Marina teaches the crew about kelp forest ecology - how sea otters keep the balance by eating urchins, how kelp holds onto rocks with a “holdfast” instead of roots, and how every creature, from rockfish to seahorses, has its own job to do. When the crew discovers a tangle of old fishing net drifting into Marina’s anemone garden, Captain Dave and Larry work together with Marina to free it and carry it safely to shore.

When Captain Dave hears about a big renovation happening in Port Alberni, he and Larry the Lobster set off on one of their longest journeys yet, sailing around the bottom of Vancouver Island, through Barkley Sound, and up the glacier-carved Alberni Inlet. When the Mellow Submarine finally reaches the busy harbour quay, Captain Dave and Larry meet real-life renovators Bryan and Sarah, who are giving the town’s marine building a fresh new look. Soon Captain Dave and Larry are rolling up their sleeves to help paint, build, and hold boards steady alongside the crew.

What's really hiding inside an old sunken ship near Nanaimo?

Fog rolls in over the water near Nanaimo, and Larry the Lobster is convinced it's the perfect day for a ghost story. When Captain Dave mentions an old shipwreck resting nearby, Larry's claws start shaking, but curiosity wins out and the Mellow Submarine dives down to take a look. What they find isn't spooky at all: barnacles, purple sea stars, a shy octopus, and a pale, waving creature that looks exactly like a ghost reaching out of a doorway. Captain Dave gently explains that she's a sea anemone, sometimes nicknamed a "ghost flower," and completely harmless. Settle in with your young explorer for a trip beneath the waves near Nanaimo, where the real treasure isn't gold, it's the wonder of life finding a home in the most unexpected places.

Summer vacation has finally arrived for Peter and Gracie, and after three very boring days of doing absolutely nothing, Peter discovers that a whole island of adventure is a lot more fun than an empty to-do list. Together with his ever-curious American Eskimo dog, Peter fills a notebook with local summer plans: bike rides to the lagoon, sandcastle building (and demolishing, courtesy of Gracie) at Rathtrevor Beach, dock-side exploring at the French Creek marina, a backyard campout, and a visit to the Qualicum Beach Museum to learn a few words of the local First Nations language.

What do you do when your dog hides her favourite toy and doesn't tell you where?

In this episode of Skookum Kid's Stories, Peter and Gracie spend a golden Saturday morning in their backyard in Coombs on Vancouver Island, playing fetch with Gracie's beloved plush hedgehog. Hector is no ordinary toy - he's Gracie's most treasured companion. But when lunchtime arrives and Hector is nowhere to be found, Peter and Gracie become a detective team, searching the rose bushes, the garden bench, and even the vegetable garden - where they make a quiet, unexpected discovery: a robin's nest with three blue-green eggs tucked among the tomato plants. The real mystery leads them to the old cedar tree, whose great root hollows hold more secrets than Peter ever imagined.
