Slay Away

Writer and director Sam Walker joins E.L. King to talk about THE SEED (2022) — a twisted blend of body horror, sci-fi, gore, and dark comedy. What begins as a girls’ trip in the Mojave Desert quickly spirals into cosmic terror, alien erotica, and mind-bending madness. The film premiered at Beyond Fest in 2021 and is Walker's first full-length feature.

We plunge into the film's ambiguity, folklore, symbolism, and Aster's exploration of trauma, grief, belonging, and ritual. Aster has called it a "breakup film, cheerfully disguised as a folk horror film."

E.L. King interviews special guests Toby Poser, John Adams, and Zelda Adams of Adams Family Films for an exclusive on their coming-of-age occult horror Shudder Original Hellbender (2021). The film follows teen Izzy (Zelda Adams) and her mother (Poser), who live simply in a home in the woods, spending their time making metal music. A chance encounter with a fellow teen causes Izzy to uncover a connection between her family and witchcraft, creating a rift with her mother.

E.L. King interviews special guest Gabriel Bier Gislason, writer and director of the folk horror romance Attachment (2022). The Shudder Original film is Gislason's directorial debut. It follows Maja (Josephine Park), a has-been actress in Denmark, who falls in love with Leah (Ellie Kendrick), a young Jewish academic visiting from London. When Leah suffers a mysterious seizure, she follows Leah back to the flat she shares with her mother, Chana (Sofie Gråbøl). As Maja notices strange occurrences in the building and behavior from Leah, she begins to suspect that Chana’s secrets could be much darker than first anticipated.

E.L. King interviews special guests Lee Roy Kunz and Cru Ennis about their thrilling religious horror film Deliver Us (2023). The film follows the entwined stories of Father Daniel and Sister Yulia (Maria Vera Ratti). When the nun claims immaculate conception at a remote convent, the Vatican sends a team of priests to investigate, concerned about an ancient prophecy that a woman will give birth to twin boys: one the Messiah, the other the Anti-Christ.

E.L. King interviews special guest John Pata about his second directorial feature film, the psychological horror thriller Black Mold (2023). The film follows photographers Brooke (Agnes Albright) and Tanner (Andrew Bailes), who, while exploring a dilapidated building, encounter a squatter who causes Brook’s memories to resurface, forcing her to face off against her traumatic past.

E.L. King interviews special guests Anthony DiBlasi and Natalie Victoria about the reimagining of their film Last Shift (2014) and its evolution to Malum (2023). The film follows rookie cop Jessica Loren (Jessica Sula), who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station, attempting to uncover the mysterious connection between her father's death and a vicious cult.

E.L. King interviews special guests Angela Basolis and Michelle May, stars of the Cosmic Horror film The Outwaters, and its producer Beau J. Genot from 5100 Films. Written and directed by Robbie Banfitch, the film follows four friends on an excursion to the Mojave Desert to shoot a music video that turns terrifying while camping when they start to experience unexplained sounds, vibrations, and unnatural animal behavior. The foursome is sent on a mind-bending trip through terror.
