Slaying Monsters

Matt sits down with author and filmmaker Adam Gorightly for a conversation on aliens, government disinformation, and conspiracy theories. Adam's new movie, Saucers, Spooks, and Kooks follows the story of scientist Paul Bennewitz, who was targeted by a mind-bending counterintelligence campaign that gave rise to enduring UFO lore. The themes of this incident spread into the 1980s UFO scene, and eventually found their way to movies and shows like the X-Files, captivating a new generation of believers. Tropes like the "Greys," underground "Reptilian" bases, and crashed saucers have had an enduring influence on popular culture and still determine how we see the UFO phenomenon today.

Matt, Katie, and EJ continue their investigation into Mokele-Mbembe and the Neo-dinosaurs of Africa. Cryptozoologist Ivan T. Sanderson gets in on the action after his own encounter with a flying creature that he swears was a pterosaur not a bat. HIs contemporary Bernard Heuvelmans believes him and includes a chapter on living dinosaurs in his book, On the Track of Unknown Animals.

Meanwhile, cryptozoologist Roy P. Mackal tries to capture photo and physical evidence of the Loch Ness Monster. His efforts fail, but connect him with other, like-minded researchers. The community belief in surviving dinosaurs is growing, but is there any actual evidence? And if those dinosaurs are still around, do they have snack pouches?

Matt, Katie, and EJ continue their investigation into the rumors of Mokele-Mbembe and the living dinosaurs of Africa. Alternative historians claim that an ancient city in Zimbabwe is the lost biblical city of Ophir. Early cryptozoologist Willy Ley gets in on the speculation too. He believes that there's a prehistoric monster etched on a Babylonian Gate and that German explorers encounter dinosaurs in Africa. Unfortunately for Ley, he's spectacularly wrong, but he's laying the groundwork for one of the most fascinating mysteries in the Fortean sciences - the living dinosaurs of the Congo.

Matt, Katie, and EJ tackle the latest Fortean news. We talk about the Department of War's UFO files, and the real purpose of UAP monitoring programs like Project Blue Book. Then, we cover the meeting of televangelists who claim they were instructed to bring UAP disclosure to their congregations. And we dive deep into the four different species of aliens, and their real origins. Plus, a new sighting from Loch Ness is not what (or who) you think!

Modern science tells us that the dinosaurs died out some sixty-six million years ago. But, according to rumors, there may be a place you can find them alive. For generations, explorers and locals claim that living dinosaurs stalk the wilds of the African jungles, hiding from discovery in one of the most inhospitable regions of the world. If true, this could be a revelation so profound that it would rock the foundations of modern science for decades.

In this series, we will explore the theory that dinosaurs have survived in the wilds of Africa, and the strange interplay of cryptozoology and creationism. How did one of the coolest animals in history end up as the pivotal argument in flawed science? And is there any proof that dinosaurs still roam the earth?

Matt, Katie, and EJ conclude their investigation into the mysterious disappearance of the Flannan Isles lighthouse keepers. Following the disappearance, rumors circulate. Some say the keepers were attacked by violent storm kelpies - water monsters which worshiped the stone henge on the island. Others claim they were swallowed by a sea monster, driven from the depths by a violent storm. But the truth of their disappearance may come from the awesome power of the sea herself, and humankind's futile drive to conquer it.

On a chilly December day in 1900, a lighthouse on the Flannan Islands in Scotland was found deserted. The three keepers who’d been living there were gone, leaving no trace but an overturned chair and plates of uneaten food. Their bodies were never found. In the intervening century, the story of the missing keepers of the Flannan Island Lighthouse has become rife with speculation and mystery. What happened to these missing men? And what sinister or catastrophic events lead to one of the most fascinating disappearances in history?

The Flannan Isles history weaves through haunting folklore and nautical mythology. From ghost ships to water monsters, long-lost cults, and phantom mariners, this is a story of the awesome power of the sea, and our sometimes futile quest to control it.

Matt, Katie, and EJ tackle the latest in Fortean news. A worrying number of scientists and engineers from government sanctioned programs are missing, with more and more being discovered every day. Vice President JD Vance believes he's figured out the demonic truth behind the UFO phenomena. An antarctic research submarine reveals puzzling objects before disappearing. And Gregg Phillips still swears that he's been teleported to a Waffle House.

Matt, Katie, and EJ conclude their investigation of the Allagash Abductions, the story of four campers encounter with beings from another world. MUFON investigator Raymond Fowler believes he's encountered a decades-long case of alien abduction. His research on the Allagash Four reveals, to him, injuries consistent with medical experimentation. But when one of the four makes a startling confession, it throws the entire case into question. Was there any truth to what happened in the Maine Wilderness? Or was it all an incredible feat of unconscious storytelling by a group desperate to believe in something out of this world?
