A calm, carefully researched bedtime biography of Sigmund Freud — the Viennese neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and placed the unconscious mind at the centre of one of the most influential and controversial theories of human psychology.
Tonight’s story follows Freud from his childhood in the Austrian Empire and his early years in Vienna, through his medical training and work as a neurologist, his studies with Jean-Martin Charcot in Paris, and the gradual development of the ideas and therapeutic methods that became psychoanalysis.
Along the way, we explore some of the ideas most closely associated with Freud: the unconscious, repression, free association, dreams, Freudian slips, childhood experience, and the later model of the id, ego and superego. We also visit the famous consulting room and couch at Berggasse 19, where listening itself became the basis of a new kind of psychological treatment.
The story follows the publication of The Interpretation of Dreams, the growth of the psychoanalytic movement, Freud’s relationships and eventual breaks with Alfred Adler and Carl Jung, and the controversies that followed theories which challenged many of the assumptions of his age.
Freud’s influence on psychotherapy, psychology and wider culture has been enormous, but many of his specific theories remain disputed, difficult to test, or unsupported by modern empirical psychology. This episode therefore explores them as historically important ideas rather than treating every Freudian claim as established scientific fact.
We then follow Freud through the difficult final period of his life — years of illness, the Nazi annexation of Austria, his escape from Vienna in 1938, and his last year in London, where his study and consulting room were recreated around the books, antiquities and famous couch brought from his former home.
Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening. There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to. Simply close your eyes, settle in, and let the story carry you.
