This second devotional is inspired by the my Torts class and one of the cause of actions that we studied: Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress.
An "Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress" (IIED) claim is when a person or persons (1) engage in outrageous conduct with (2) either the intention to inflict emotional distress or knowledge that emotional distress will result, or reckless disregard of the probability of causing a person’s intentional infliction of emotional distress, and then (3) causes that person to suffer severe emotional distress to result.
The question here is: Did Joseph have a claim against his brothers for intentional infliction of emotional distress when they threw him in the well and then sold him as a slave? Did Joseph have a claim against Potiphar's wife for intentional infliction of emotional distress when she accused him of attempted sexual assault?
Summary: The story of Joseph shows us some pretty awful acts by people against Joseph. But, in the end, Joseph says: you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good (ch. 50:20). We have a powerful God with a plan to work things for good.
This first devotional is inspired by the song "Christ Be Magnified" by Cody Carnes.
The chorus - "Christ be magnified" - comes from Philippians 1:20, which reminds us to live our lives so that Christ is magnified inside of us
NIV: I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
KJV: According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
A line from the bridge - "And if it puts me in the fire, I'll rejoice 'cause You're there too" - comes from Daniel 3:25. It reminds us that in the worst of times God is right there with us.
NIV: He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
