November 13, 2020E18 | Don’t allow politics to dictate your love, the importance of openness, and my own heartbreaking blindness
Show Notes:
This whole year has been an election.
Divided yard signs, social media posts, and silent judgements.

President Trump has not conceded to Joe Biden. Accusations of fraud, and cheating.

Jesus sees past “party lines” in the Gospels.
You cannot love someone if you are silently judging them.

Oh yeah, and Jesus also says not to judge others. I believe that is because he knows you cannot love someone if you are standing on some sort of moral superiority.

Dear Christian, you are not morally superior to non-Christians. Without the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus you would remain condemned so do not condemn your neighbor.

Love = openness
A huge issue is our struggle to engage people different from us.

Openness to behold someone else also allows for empathy, compassion, and release of judgement.

Didn’t God give you space to fail and learn to come to him by HIS Spirit’s prompting?

My own blindness this year has been painful
I studied History and Political science in college and loved it.

This past year I have put my foot in my mouth out of complete lack of compassion for others (Black community, the poor, and more)

My blindness came from my own pride of wanting to be right and my inability to be open to others.

Jesus has received us with open arms, no expectations, and his grace reached for us long before we could respond. If we want to be like Jesus we are called to love and ask questions later.

Let the Holy Spirit WORK!!!! People need space, patience, and care. You cannot change people. Praise God.

Jesus invites us into a radical love
We can love the tax collectors, prostitutes, Pharisees, democrats, republicans, fascist, and communists all the same. The world needs us friends.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”

Jesus is what matters, and the Sacraments, the historic teachings help you on that path.

Sacramental Theology is a Game-Changer
“If the Eucharist (Communion) is just a symbol then to Hell with it.”-Flannery O'connor.

“If Jesus didn’t rise from the grave then to hell with it”

Real Presence is radical and makes sense.

Every church has a ritual, a liturgy that tells you what they value.

The Ancient church confirmed what I had experienced in God’s Grace.
“All is Grace”-Brennan Manning

One huge truth of my life is that, “life with God is far more about God’s grace than my response.”

The great mystery of God. The God of the supernatural, the natural, and awe.

Grace is a gift not something we “conjure up.”

October 04, 2020E16 | Be the Person Who Says, "I don't know."
Show Notes:
What does it mean to be an expert in something?
Do you need a degree in a subject? Work a job in a particular area? Be a person famous for your knowledge?
Oftentimes it seems there is an area I don’t know much of anything about. Actually there are many things I know absolutely nothing about. However, in certain moments I fake it. I lie. I basically was a compulsive liar in Elementary and Middle school. I would tell the tallest of tales to boost my robust persona.
Now at age 25 this looks a bit different. I tend to avoid topics altogether I know little about. But life brings moments that expose part of the old man in us.
On this episode I will share a few stories of moments I have defended my pride by acting like an expert, what I learned from that/God has shown me, and how I have been learning the power of simply saying I don’t know or no.
Story #1: Hardware Humility; Local hardware store to get screws for a footstool I set my mind to building.

Story #2: My Culinary Arts; Futile attempts to be a grand chef while barely able to cook consistent grilled cheese.
What I learned?
I am a presenter. A dang good one at that. Something I dislike about my old self if my tendency to make a job I have done look good but in fact I am aware of how little I actually put into it.

I think higher of my abilities than I should. I can catch creative inspiration by eating French fries. I can dream and envision anything. The problem is I can often way overestimate my ability to put in the work.

I generally operate out of a lie that life is easy and I’m surprised when it isn’t. Particularly when it comes to learning complex things I want microwave fast results.
Stories of Growth
Story #3 Recent: cycling with my dad. Talking with friends about cycling and just having fun.

Story #4 Farm job. Becoming a learner and a better worker.
Wrap up
Life taking yourself too seriously not only destroys joy but it is full of pride.

Freedom comes in coming out of hiding and being who you are with all you know and don’t know.

Our digital “enlightened” age expects you to know everything all the time. Be different and be honest. There are very few experts and honesty about yourself may open the door for you to truly learn.
