  • Pegcast #1
Hi! I'm Peggy from the Pains and this is a mix I made. Here are some notes: I couldn't decide which Gregory Webster non-Razorcuts song I wanted to use, but this Saturn V song is one I discovered on a Vinyl Japan comp. It's so slacker 90s indie rock sounding. Also, there's a Smashing Pumpkins song that is the b-side to my favorite SP song ever, "1979." James Iha sings it and I'm pretty sure it was recorded on a 4-track. A guy I met on AOL put this on a tape for me when I was in high school and I loved it to death back then. Further is another band that I loved in high school, I need to track down the song that's on the My So-Called Life soundtrack. The Conny song is from an album called "This Is Love" of Swedish bands covering Haddaway's "What is Love" which I highly recommend. Well, for anyone who loves cheesy early nineties dance jams as much as me. Anyway, sorry if there are too many gross love songs on here. Ew!

    1) Triffids "Stand Up"
    2) Further "Teenage Soul"
    3) Spinning Jennys "I'd Laugh If Your Head Exploded"
    4) The Dentists "I Had an Excellent Dream"
    5) Yummy Fur "The Career Saver"
    6) Teenage Fanclub "So Far Gone" (Peel Session)
    7) Saturn V "Machine-Gun Head"
    8) Proclaimers "Then I Met You"
    9) Ninth Arena "The Room"
    10) Scars "All About You"
    11) Girlboy Girl "Feeder"
    12) Age of Chance "Everlasting Yeah"
    13) Television Personalities "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night"
    14) Smashing Pumpkins "The Boy"
    15) Cherry Smash "Nowhere Generation"
    16) The Sundays "My Finest Hour"
    17) Mari Wilson "Stop and Start"
    18) Conny "What Is Love"
    19) Grab Grab the Haddock "Last Fond Goodbye"

  • One Step At A Time
My name is Herbie and for whatever reason I decided to use the name HTSHELL for when I play records. I live in Philadelphia and play in the groups Brown Recluse Sings and Auto Scroll. I also am part of a monthly night called "ENGLAND BELONGS TO TWEE" (http://www.myspace.com/englandbelongstotwee) where we get too excited by mixing Cock Sparrer into Heavenly and Tiger Trap into Sham 69.
But for this I just grabbed a bunch of 45s and pressed record and this is what came out. There's mostly soul, a little pop, and an enigmatic song for what would be the closing credits. All these records came from trips to flea markets in the eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, and central NJ regions from January-October 2008. The recording itself is somewhat scratchy, but I think vinyl hiss and crackle sounds infinitely more pleasing than MP3 compression.
I'm trying to take things one step at a time this year, which is hard for me because I tend to start something and never finish it. Hopefully this long overdue podcast is the first in a trend of bringing more ideas and projects to fruition. Thanks for listening and big thanks to the whole Slumberland fam!

  • i will treasure you
I was going to try and be hip and fill this up with obscure bands but instead opted for the happening right now bands so here is a selection of my favourite songs of the moment, I hope you enjoy some if not all of them.

    www.thisalmightypop.com

    1. Lets Whisper - Dylan's Song- this is the side project of Dana and Colin from The Smittens and it can be found on the more than excellent WeePop! label. (http://www.myspace.com/letswhispermusic)
    2. A Classic Education - Wartimes - were the stars of last summer's indie tracks festival. This is from the bands' self released 12" single. (www.aclassiceducation.com)
    3. Blackflower - Summer Has Changed - is from their debut album You and Me, which is most played LP of the year, two of them are from Darlington only 7 miles from where I am sitting. (http://www.myspace.com/blackflowermusic)
    4. Countryside - Summer Is Here - were a band I saw play a majestic set in the church at my first indie tracks in '07. They have also just said yes to putting out this song on my record label. (http://www.myspace.com/countrysideland)
    5. Les Cox (sportifs) - Dresden - are another special band who are still a bit of a secret at the moment but hopefully not for much longer. This song is from their debut album Neverheed. (http://www.myspace.com/lescoxsportifs)
    6. Phil Wilson - White Night - who kindly let me release an e.p. by him on my label, but this is from an e.p. called New Wave on the German Edition 59 label which has just been released, you should also pick up 2 x 7" Industrial Strength on Slumberland if you haven't already. (http://www.myspace.com/philwilsonjunebride)
    7. Play People - Meet Me Saturday - this from a CD e.p. on Cloudberry who are also about to release the bands' first vinyl single called "Goes Out" which is even better than this song. (http://www.myspace.com/themosquitoesuk)
    8. Moira Stewart - We Still Live With Our Parents - A band you really should see live at least once, if only to hear their perfect version of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher," that I want to release on my label, but I haven't asked them yet. (http://www.myspace.com/moirastewartmusic)
    9. Withered Hand - I Am Nothing - Scottish popstars who surely would have had a place on 53rd and 3rd if they were born 20 years sooner. (http://www.myspace.com/witheredhandmusic)
    10. The Middle Ones - Goodnight Song - another indie tracks encounter brought this band to my attention, they giggled like giddy kippers during their performance in the church, reminding me of Kathryn Williams and The Marine Girls, which has got to a good thing. (http://www.myspace.com/themiddleones)
    11. Horowitz - I Was The Son Of A Teenage Comicbook Superhero's Trusty Sidekick - Nearly every band I like seems to have some sort of IndieTracks connection and I make no secret of the fact that that is where I first fell in love with Horowitz's lo-fi grooviness. The fact that Pete was also the ball boy behind the goal in the 1973 FA cup final when Ian Porterfield scored Sunderland's winner against Leeds United makes me love them even more. This song is from their recently released CD e.p. on Edition 59. (http://www.myspace.com/horowitzband)
    12. Kuma - My Name Is Kuma - This is also from a CD on WeePop! If listening to this song doesn't make you smile and dance nothing will. (http://mynameiskuma.com)
    13. The Catalysts - The Girl From New York - This is Ulric from The Mixers and The Golden Dawn, as good as those bands were, The Catalysts are now my favourites. This on the Ulric's own Spirophone label. (http://www.myspace.com/catalysts)

  • So Hard To Beat
Teenage Kicks is a monthly P!O!P party held in San Francisco by el Guapo and DJ In The Manner of a Leprechaun (who you might remember from his earlier Slumberland podcast). We love all kinds of pop music, from '60s pop to '70s bubblegum, early punk and post-punk, and of course indie pop from the '80s through to the present day. We thought we'd share some of that love with you and do something we don't normally get to do in a club setting, namely go head to head trading off songs; we hope you like it. We play 100% vinyl and are always digging for new P!O!P gems. If you're ever in the SF Bay Area on the second Friday of the month, we hope to see you at The Attic, 2333 24th Street at Mission, where we'll be playing some fine pop songs from 10pm-2am!

Just the thought of what the Boyracer family's record collection must look like brings a tear to my eye. If i had a nickel for every great record Stew's turned me onto, I'd have enough money to catch up on the Searching For The Now series. This is Jen and Stew's first podcast, and I think you'll find it to be beyond enlightening. Exotic DIY pop singles and tapes rain down like manna, and Mr & Mrs 'Racer drop informative chat between the tunes to keep you scurrying for the notepad. Ace stuff.
