Elizabeth: Okay, we’re back with another episode of the Small Biz Ahead podcast. This is Elizabeth Larkin. I’m here with small business guru, Gene Marks.

Gene: On time.

Elizabeth: Who is always on time. I’m going to read another one of our iTunes reviews because it’s really nice.

Gene: This has to be a bad one, right?

Elizabeth: No, no, no.

Gene: Oh, it’s another good review from iTunes?

Elizabeth: It’s pretty good, yeah. I know. We haven’t gotten any bad ones yet. If you want to leave a bad one, you can leave us a review on iTunes.

Gene: No, don’t do that. Go on, bring it on. I like hearing these good things.

Elizabeth: Okay, “This is pretty good.”

Gene: Wait, did you say that, or did the reviewer say that?

Elizabeth: That’s the review.

Gene: Oh.

Elizabeth: “I just stumbled on this as I was looking for info on starting a business. There’s a lot of good information and the hosts are fun to listen to. It covers a wide range of subjects for business owners, but it’s mostly focused on new businesses, which I like. I’ve purchased a few e-books on running a business, and they’re all geared toward businesses that have like 40 employees. My business will be a sole proprietorship, and there just isn’t a lot of info geared towards these types of businesses.”

Gene: Good for you.

Elizabeth: Well, thank you so much for the review.

Gene: Good for you.

Elizabeth: I think, yeah, we actually answer a lot of questions from sole proprietors.

Gene: We do.

Elizabeth: A lot of the questions for sole proprietors are transferable to those bigger companies. Most of the questions we answer are pretty … They have common themes.

Gene: They do. We talk about business management and how to make money.

Elizabeth: Okay, we’re back with another episode of the Small Biz Ahead podcast. This is Elizabeth Larkin, and I’m here with Gene Marks, our small business guru.

Gene: Expert. Yes, right.

Elizabeth: This week we’re going to be talking about open floor plans and managing work hours when you have employees working all over the place. Something I wanted to talk about before we start is I just saw a survey that only 25% of small business owners who are on Facebook are advertising on Facebook. Which to me, it’s so cheap. It’s so budget friendly to advertise on Facebook.

Gene: It is.

Elizabeth: You advertise on Facebook.

Gene: I do.

Elizabeth: You sell CRMs.

Gene: Yeah, I do. I advertise on Facebook. We talked on another podcast about generating data. It costs me about $20 a lead is what it’s now calculating out on Facebook, which to me is huge. Great. Fantastic. $20 for a lead to me is great. Now some companies can sell. Again, if you’ve got Facebook messenger and you want to advertise, people can buy stuff right on Facebook. They’re not just leads, but it’s actually customers. The biggest reason why a lot of people don’t advertise on Facebook is because they don’t know how. They’re intimidated by it. Like me. It’s on me. I’m uneducated, naïve, ignorant about the process, and don’t even know where to start. Advertising on Facebook, the cost is really not the cost of Facebook advertising. The cost is probably hiring somebody to help you do it.

Elizabeth: I think another issue is that a lot of businesses think that it’s a B to C play, but it can be a B to B play.

Gene: It can be. That’s interesting because, and again, we’ve talked previously about it, I think it mostly is a B to C. I really do. I do think that most of the people that are on there are consumers. If you are running like a pet store or a clothing shop or something where you’ve got customers out there that are B to C, I think that you have a better chance. I don’t sell my products on it. I’m selling white papers and events. It’s more B to B. If you’re interested in this type of software, click here to download a white paper, and I get your information that way. That, to me, is a lead. The other thing is that Facebook has programs that a lot of business owners don’t even know about like the Lookalike program for example. In Facebook’s Lookalike, you can actually take your list of customers and their names and their email addresses upload it to Facebook. Facebook with match those customers with other Facebook users that have similar profiles and likes and characteristics.

Elizabeth: Hence the Lookalike.

Elizabeth: Which is … of those things is harder?

Gene: Oh, god. Don’t even know. All I know is getting people to pay me on time is what causes me nausea as opposed to motivating our employees.

Elizabeth: I’m going to not even try to take a stab at this. I’m going to let Gene answer it, but I will say that you should think of it as your profit is different from your cash flow. Elizabeth: That is so nice, because I feel like that is our place in the market. There are other podcasts out there, but they're all for entrepreneurs. There about passive income, and ours is really about real business owners sending in real every day questions.

Gene:    I've always been about that. I get it, the media, the people that get attention, you're on Shark Tank, you've come up with a great idea, you're a venture capitalist Or a tech company. Meanwhile, my client base, a bunch of boring old small business owners who are selling pipes, and landscaping services, and roofing services, and they operate out of industrial parks. But they all have questions about running the businesses. Mainstream America has established businesses that's what it is.

Elizabeth: We're talking to the people, that when politicians talk about small business owners, that's who we are talking to. We are not talking to the solo entrepreneur who wants to change the world, we're talking to people that actually are running, or starting a new small business.

Elizabeth: I know, I blame it on my dog. Because she runs around on a farm on the weekends, and then comes and jumps on me. I think it came from the dog and then transferred to me, but I keep getting it. I got it two weeks ago. Then I got it, I keep getting fresh patches popping up all over the place. I don't know. I need to do an intervention. She did get a bath last night.

Gene:   You guys can't see this, but Elizabeth's her entire face is covered with calamine lotion. It's all pink and crusty.

Elizabeth: I look crazy.

Gene:   It's terrible.

Elizabeth: Anyway, we have two exciting announcements this week. One, the podcast is now on iTunes, so you can go subscribe. That’s awesome. Two, we have an official form now where you can submit a question to us. Previously, we were having people submit submit questions via our social media channels, Facebook and twitter, and we still want you to follow us there, but now we have an official form where you can submit your questions.
