To help us understand this issue better, I have Nailah Dean from the US. She wrote an article that you can read on Al Jazeera.com ‘The hidden racism of the Muslim marriage market’ She outlines why we cannot defeat racism if we continue to allow cultural biases to govern who we love or who we let our children marry.

Growing up in the UK and US we all know we are drip-fed a particular narrative about love. The majority of books, cartoons, TV shows, and movies tell us we should meet someone, get to know them by going out on dates, texting and flirting, etc and then once we have 'got to know them' for a few years, then we can get married.
That's how you fall in love. In a liberal secular society, that's the only acceptable option on the menu when it comes to love and relationships. It's interesting that not getting married is also ok and having a same-sex relationship is also cool.
The worst mistake you can make is to marry the first guy you like or rush into anything because how will you know he is 'the one' if you don't have any experience?
I want to test the validity of this narrative and to help me do that I have Heraa Hashmi she's a 23-year old graduate in Molecular Biology, currently working in research and based out of the Bay Area. She also serves as the Marketing Director for Traversing Tradition, and her interests include the Islamic sciences, linguistics, and bioethics.

My husband recorded this episode for his podcast and so I wanted to share it with you all. Hope you find it as enlightening as I did.
To help us understand the current crises in France, I am delighted to have on The Thinking Muslim Sheikh Yasir Qadhi. Dr. Yasir Qadhi is well known in the Muslim community, he is a scholar and since 2001, he has served as Dean of Academic Affairs at the Al-Maghrib Institute, with a center in Houston, Texas. He is currently the resident scholar of the East Plano Islamic Center in Texas.
Dr. Qadhi has raised some searching questions over the past few weeks about French policy towards Muslims, violence perpetrated by a minority of those Muslims and, he argues, the potential for the ‘French model’ to be exported to other countries where Muslims are a minority. We ask Dr Qadhi about Islamic justifications for violence, how we should defend the honour of the Messenger of Allah (saw), the position of minority communities, the role of scholarship in politics and raising awareness about these issues and we also speak about the current problem with many Islamic scholars who chose to remain silent instead of speaking truth to power, lest they lose their position, usually gained through political patronage or they lose their following. Inevitably the thorny subject of scholars and despotic rulers comes up, and Dr. Qadhi gives his frank opinion on the matter.

Whilst conducting research for my book, Smart Single Muslima, I’ve spoken to a number of women who followed a career path and completed their education before considering marriage. But they have hit a brick wall: they can't find a compatible Muslim man who fits their criteria of a suitable husband. Naturally, men also have their own criteria and it seems like both genders are looking at different checklists.
So we have an elephant in the room and very few Muslims want to talk about it. A growing number of single Muslimas are finding it difficult to get married. They are unhappy with the confusing expectations dictated to them by western liberals and unislamic eastern culture. For some, a consuming sense of hopelessness overcomes them as they face the real possibility of never getting married.

Recently I've been learning about what it means to have a growth mindset. It's a really interesting topic and I think as Muslims we can apply some of the ideas to the way we view marriage. So a growth mindset is a belief that our abilities can be developed and improved. Of course, we should always begin every new endeavor with dua to Allah to help us and then we need to put the effort in. Another aspect of the growth mindset is to acknowledge we are not perfect. So again we know only Allah is perfect whereas we make mistakes, but the important thing is to learn from them.
So in today's episode, I have the pleasure of speaking to Zakkiya Ali, she has a website called www.Muslimommy.com, it's an online resource for Muslimas and Moms who want to feel supported and live a life that’s less stressful and overwhelming. The goal is to present spiritual and practical advice to live with more intention, be mindful, and focus on being healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally as a busy mom. Zakiyya has been married for a number of years we will be discussing how we can have a growth mindset regarding marriage

In this episode, I'm speaking to Bint Yasin to explore the issues single Muslims face in their search for a suitable spouse. Bint Yasin is a 25-year-old single sister from Australia. She is active in her local Muslim community and has had her fair share of experiences when it comes to marriage - including personal experiences, acting as a pseudo-matchmaker in the community, and close friends who’ve recently went through the marriage process.
We explored the following topics:
How do you get to know what a guy is like before marriage without dating?
What is the marriage scene like for single Muslims?
There are many factors to think about when looking to get married, where are the Muslim women getting their standards from regarding who they want to marry?
Are the expectations in Muslim families and the Muslim Community reasonable or realistic?
Is the complaint from women that there aren’t enough decent Muslim men, out there true?
What’s a healthy Islamic attitude and approach to getting married?
Practical advice for our single Muslim sisters
