Welcome to the Smart Startup English podcast, episode 25. In this episode, we’re talking about startup co-living. This term refers to living with people who aren’t your family, or living in a larger community with a lot of shared resources.

This trend is gaining a lot of popularity in the world of digital entrepreneurs, digital nomads and startup founders.

If you rent in a co-living community, you’ll get your own living space - it could be a simple bedroom, a studio, or it might even be an apartment. That depends on your budget, of course, but also on the type of co-living community you’re joining.

In this episode, we talk about the reasons why entrepreneurs choose to move to a co-living community, as well as the possible reasons why this might not be a good choice for others.

A few new expressions we’re explaining in this episode include: a flat fee, amenities, price tag, upmarket.

These parks are physical locations where these stakeholders rent office space to work and to keep connected to what’s going on in the industry.

Are there any science and technology parks in your country? 

In this episode, we use the term "technology park," but the full name is actually Science and Technology Park - or STP, for short. There are a couple of other names for this concept, such as research park, technopolis or technopoles.

In episode 21, we’re talking about the French Tech Mission - a government-backed initiative to attract young businesses to France and encourage investment.

Technically, it’s a department of the French government, but practically it’s operating right in the middle of one of the world’s biggest startup campuses in the heart of Paris: Station F.

The initiative also has local offices in other French cities - right in the middle of the local startup communities. They call themselves a new type of civil servants that can help startups bridge the gap between policy and the practical aspects of starting a business in France.

In episode 18 of the Smart Startup English podcast, we’re talking about candidate engagement. This refers to how well candidates feel they were treated during the recruiting process. It’s not surprising that about 60 percent of the people applying for a job think that they haven’t been treated fairly during their job search.

A survey found that when job seekers have a bad experience, about 42% of them would never apply to that company again and 22% said they would tell others not to apply either. And people even report that they stop buying a company’s products if they feel that the company treated them poorly.

In episode 17 of the Smart Startup English podcast, we’re talking about what you should do when your manager has unrealistic expectations. Or if you’re a freelancer, you may be dealing with unrealistic expectations from clients.

Expectations refers to something that someone believes or hopes will happen in the future. If someone has unrealistic expectations of you, that means they want you to accomplish something that’s hard or impossible to accomplish. A manager might have unrealistic expectations about deadlines or about the workload - the amount of work that an employee can do.
