  • 10 Resume Mistakes That Will Kill Your Job Search

Crafting a resume is just one part of a multiple step job search process. Your job search plan should also include networking (virtually or in person), developing a list of target employers, determining your salary expectations, preparing for job interviews and salary negotiation, etc.

Still, in many cases, your resume is the catalyst that gets the ball rolling. Without a compelling, results driven resume you may never get contacted for a job interview.

There are many articles on how to write a resume that generates calls, I’ve written several myself. I have a few podcast episodes that tell you how to create a results-driven resume.

(To learn how to create resume achievements listen to Episode #8 – How to Create Resume Content That Gets Results)

There are a lot of “how to” articles, to switch things up, this episode focuses on 10 resume mistakes that can take you out of the running for your target position.

#1 Don’t lie. Even if it’s not picked up during the interview process, it may cause employers to rescind a job offer.

#2 Don’t provide information about your hobbies and interests UNLESS they are relevant to your target position.

#3 Don’t forget to include a Summary and/or Career Highlights in the top-third of your resume.

#4 Don’t write in paragraphs or bullets only. Use a mix to make your resume easy-to-scan.

#5 Don’t focus on things that you don’t want to do in your next position. This can backfire on you.

#6 Don’t have any misspellings, typos, grammatical errors. Read your resume backwards to catch mistakes.

#7 Don’t use “vague” terms like “responsible for” and “duties included.” Action words get attention.

#8 Don’t include an “Objective Statement” at the top of your resume. As previously mentioned, create a Summary.

#9 Don’t only include a job overview. Focus on your achievements. Listen to Episode 8 to learn how.

#10 Don’t be afraid to get help with your resume if you need it. Here’s what to look for in a resume writer.

  • Show Me The Money - How To Answer The "Salary" Question

Most job seekers dread talking to recruiters and employers about salary. In many states it’s illegal to ask candidates about their current salary. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be asked about your expectations.

The truth is, you can’t completely dodge the salary question.

But, to some degree you can control it. You do this by understanding the process and being prepared.

This episode covers 3 areas: why recruiters as about your salary, possible ways to respond, and how to determine a salary range. ***

#1 Why do recruiters ask about your salary?

As a former recruiter, I know they don’t ask your salary requirements to put you on the spot. Recruiters ask about your salary because each job has a predetermined salary range which has been provided by the hiring manager and/or human resources.

Experienced recruiters know that salaries at the higher end of the spectrum will go to the most desirable candidates, those who have everything they are looking for, and salaries at the lower end will go to those with fewer skills or less experience.

(To learn more about how recruiters work listen to Episode #5 Former Recruiter Shares How Recruiters Work and How They Can (And Cannot) Help You)

#2 How should you respond to questions about salary?

If you want to be considered for the position you need to prepare an answer for salary questions.

Some states have passed laws prohibiting employers from asking job applicants about their salary history. As of June 2, 2020, 19 states have enacted salary history bans, according to HRDIVE. (Check your state on HRDIVE’s running list of salary history bans.)

But that doesn’t mean there will be no salary questions. Recruiters and employers can ask you about your expectations. There are a few ways you can answer. Always remember that the highest salary in that range will go to a candidate who meets most if not all the requirements.

#3 How to you decide on a salary range?

Research, research, research. The best way to be ready for the dreaded salary question is to prepare in advance. There is plenty of information readily available.

One of the easiest ways to find out salary information is online. A few of them are

Salary.com, Payscale.com, Bureau of Labor and Statistics (Wage Data by Area and Occupation), and The Occupational Outlook Handbook (Earnings)

After your research get additional information by talking to people either familiar with or working in your target position.

Remember that compensation is more than just salary. It’s also benefits like health insurance, vacation and sick time (Paid Time Off), tuition reimbursement, flexible schedules, etc. Make a list of the criteria that’s most important to help you evaluate job offers.

Talking salary is tricky for both sides. Prepare your answer to the salary question before you begin your job search to avoid getting caught off guard.

  • How To Get A Job By Tapping The "Hidden" Job Market

If you’ve been looking for a job for more than a minute, you’ve heard about the “Hidden” job market. It’s where all the good jobs are, but no one can find it.

The truth is, it’s not so hidden.

Many job seekers are told by well meaning career professionals, that finding a job is a number game. It only takes one job. It’s just a matter of finding the right employer.

The problem is that most job seekers mistakenly think that the best way to find a job is to sit at the computer and apply to as many jobs as they can.

    That’s a big mistake.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    — What the “hidden” job market really is, and where you can find those “unadvertised” jobs

    — The best way to find a job. Hint: it’s not spending all day on the job boards

    — Why social media is so important, and how you can use it to find jobs

  • How To Create Resume Content That Gets Results - Developing Achievement Statements

There are a several elements that make one resume more effective than another. First, a resume needs to grab the reader’s attention. It needs to present what the candidate has to offer right up front. It also needs to sell the candidate to the recruiter and hiring manager.

One of the reasons DIY resumes fail is because people focus on what they do on a day-to-day basis. They think that talking about their duties and responsibilities is enough. Its not.

Today’s resumes are more like marketing documents that employment histories. Yes, you need to include your professional experience. But you need to do it in a way that demonstrates what you can do for the employer. You need to show results.

And you need to do it fast. A 2018 study by The Ladders found recruiters take 7.4 seconds to decide if a candidate is qualified. A 2014 CareerBuilder survey found employers take 2 minutes.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    — Why resume writers and other career professionals say you need an achievement-based or results-driven resume.

    —  The secret to getting a recruiters’ and employers’ attention enough to make them contact you. Hint: you need to do it fast.

    —  How long recruiters and hiring managers look at your resume before making a decision, and where they look first on your resume.

    —  The simple formula resume writers use with their clients to draw out achievement statements, Challenge, Action, Result.

    —  How to develop metrics for your achievements, even if you’re not in sales or marketing. Its just a matter of thinking a little differently.

    — The basics you need to include for each position over the last 10 to 15 years.

  • Have You Fallen For These 7 Job Search Myths? That's Why You Didn't Get Hired

There’s a lot of career advice online. And more articles are being posted every day.  Annette admits she’s written her share. Despite all the readily available information, several job search myths just refuse to go away.

In this session, you’ll learn about 7 job search myths and how you can beat them. I want to talk about 7.

     — Myth #1 Apply to as many jobs as you can – It’s not just a numbers game. You need to work the “hidden” job market.

    — Myth #2 You can’t get a job through social media – Lots of jobs are posted on social media, and while you’re there build some relationships.

    —  Myth #3 You only need to network when you’re out of work— People are more likely to help people they know and like, build your network now.

     — Myth #4 You only need to engage with recruiters when you’re looking — Help recruiters when you can, they will remember you.

     —  Myth #5 Adding your current job to your old resume will work — Revamping your resume takes strategy and skill.

     — Myth #6 You don’t need a cover letter — Whether or not cover letters make a difference is hotly disputed. But why take a chance?

     — Myth #7 You don’t need a thank you note, either — Most employers (94%) say a thank you note is expected.

Finding and securing a job takes work. Sitting in front of the computer filling out job applications all day isn’t the best use of your time.

  • 5 Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile More Effective

Your LinkedIn profile is your face to the business world. When recruiters, employers, or people you meet at networking events visit your LinkedIn profile they are looking for some insight into who you are as well as your professional experience. In other words, why you do what you do, not just what you do.

If key elements of your profile are missing or barely there, it can hurt your chances of finding a new job. In episode you'll learn how to make sure 5 essential sections are working effectively for you.

#1 Head shot - Many people don't include a head shot because they worry about discrimination. But not having one makes people wonder why. They think you're hiding something.

#2 Background photo - A lot of people don't bother to put up a background photo. But not having one makes your profile, and by extension you, look out of touch.

#3 Headline - LinkedIn calls the Headline a headline for a reason. Don't just use the default headline, your job and title, use LinkedIn's headline sell yourself.

#4 About - Don't waste this space selling your employer or fill it with a boring biography. Use it to tell your career story.

#5 Professional Experience - If a recruiter stumbles on your LinkedIn profile, don't think job titles and employer names are going to sell him or her. They want to see what you can do. It's also a place to add some personality

  • How To Avoid Age Discrimination In Your Job Search

One of the biggest worries I hear from my senior level clients and job seekers in general  is the fear of  about age discrimination. Serious concerns begin around age 55, but some people, particularly women, tell me they begin to feel it as early as their mid-forties.

Yes, age discrimination is out there. But there are a lot of reasons, not related to skills, that people don’t get hired. Candidates may be considered too young, too old or, in some cases, the wrong gender. You may not get hired because you remind the interviewer of a former colleague or even a neighbor they don’t like.

Conscious and unconscious biases exist. We all have them.

While you can’t control other people's biases, you don’t have to feed into them either. In this episode, you'll learn some strategies to help you mitigate age discrimination.

    In this session you'll learn

    * How your email address may be aging you - and what to do about it

    * Why you need a photo on LinkedIn - Hint: Profiles with photos a lot more views

    * Why you need a background photo on your LinkedIn profile too

    * How you may be misusing your LinkedIn profile, and how to fix that

    * Why you need to rethink your look, is your wardrobe dating you
