This show was about as nWo-era WCW as it gets. Front-loaded chaos culminating with a classic Hulk Hogan stinker. Rey Misterio, Jr. and Eddy Guerrero turned in a match for the ages, but was it good enough to redeem WCW Halloween Havoc 1997? Short answer: no. Long answer: no, but wordier.

That's gotta be Kane!

I led with that because it's essentially all that happens on this show. On a day where WWF learned of the tragic death of one of their stars, Brian Pillman, and the owner of the company started what was a disgraceful PR campaign with a minis match, WWF debuted a legendary character. Did the very first Hell in a Cell match live up to the hype?

Well... AEW's All Out PPV blew our minds. From the match quality to the new signings, it was a rare perfect night in wrestling history. The Snark Marks went live on their Youtube channel immediately following the show to discuss their takeaways.

On August 9, 1997, WCW held a PPV at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The show was 1997's nWo era in a nutshell- it was centered around Eric Bischoff's belief that motorcycles and middle aged men are inherently cool, the babyfaces were screwed, and the last five matches averaged 1 star from Dave Meltzer.

THIS PODCAST, however, is much more fun. It's not the corny motorcycle rally; it's more like the Dusty Rhodes in jean shorts and cowboy boots at the corny motorcycle rally. Timeless. Charismatic. Radiant.

Stipulations galore as the Hart Foundation takes on the world. Will Ken Shamrock eat dog food? Will Brian Pillman wrestle in a dress? Will "The Hitman" be banned from wrestling in the United States? No, yes, and of course not. The real story of this PPV is the future of Stone Cold Steve Austin being forever changed on account of his being too god dang low during an Owen Hart piledriver. Summerslam 1997 wasn't one of wrestling's greatest shows, but an argument can be made that it's one of its most influential.

Well, it happened. CM Punk showed up on AEW Rampage, and it was everything any of us could have dreamed of. SummerSlam also happened this weekend, which gave us a chance to compare the approaches of the two promotions. Frank Mir losing and eventually finding a horseshoe is also mentioned.
