On this episode we pine for the days when Ms. Roberts had a less icky screen role, say as a prostitute or even Hugh Grant's lover. All manner of sins which she has done in her service as a genuine movie star, but THIS... this was too much for the American public in 1996 and it has not become any sexier since.

John Woo brought his over-the-top sensibilities to mainstream American success with BROKEN ARROW (never mind the earlier HARD TARGET) and landed right in the middle of the John Travolta renaissance. Unfortunately he paired this mugging masterpiece of a performance with fuddy-duddies like Christian Slater (PUMP UP THE VOLUME baby) as unbelievably his kickboxing sparring partner, Samantha Morton (also of the great PUMP UP THE VOLUME) as the world's best park ranger, and Frank Whaley as an ROTC DORK.

BED OF ROSES is a sweet movie about two creeps who shouldn't be creepy together... but then again they are both saving another life by combining their creep powers. And while none of us have Christian Slater's hair (probably far closer to Mary Stuart Masterson in that department) we still produce a weekly(ish) podcast about our creepy thoughts.

And we still don't get this flick. An expert commentary track ready for your ears as we eventually talk about one host's latest Amazon purchase that avoids awkward flower deliveries or Christmas proposals. All it needs is a microwave and the occasional cleaning. Romance!

As we continue to get lazier on this show (once there were two movies an episode, how foolish) we have handed over our film-watching fates to the gods of 1996 as we begin our journey to go week by week through the year that is well-known as the peak of cinema!

Also Salma Hayek as a vampire stripper is an obvious place to start.

Not just with movies. With anything. And who are we to question this simple fact? Along the way we debate if two and a half decades have revealed our initial enthusiasm for Ms. Hayek's monsters as the product of teenage hormones or perhaps life is a truly a flat circle and we will come to terms with now just being horny old men.

We cruise (excuse us, a crossing) into the new year with The GOAT, Meryl Streep, in her latest LET THEM ALL TALK. This improvised Steven Soderbergh film finds her doing battle with Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest and the next member of that gang, our co-host The Nasty Hellcat.

THE RIVER WILD from 1994 may be more his speed as in this Curtis Hanson directed film we find Streep in charge of nature but taking orders from a Kevin Bacon who can't swim. But chooses his mode of getaway travel to be water. Good decisions being made in 2021 like listening to SOBER CINEMA!
