In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Ralph Payton, Executive Director of the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program (GRIP), for a conversation about what it actually takes to run a family shelter, and what it takes to keep families under one roof while they rebuild.

Ralph's story starts far from Richmond, it begins in Toronto, Canada, where his passion for this work first took root. Watching his father and mother serve the community, is where the love for community was birth. That early spark carried him through decades of homeless services across the Bay Area, the Bronx, and Miami, before landing him at GRIP, an organization that's grown since 1968 from a small community food pantry into a multi-service agency sheltering unhoused families and feeding thousands of Richmond residents each year.

Vanessa and Ralph dig into, entitlement, wrap around services, and what Housing First was originally designed to do, where it succeeds, and where it runs into friction. They talk about the real barriers our community faces, lack of empathy, funding, capacity, and the gap between a family's needs and what any one shelter can provide and the wins that keep the work sustainable: families kept together, staff who stay, and a community of faith congregations still showing up fifty-plus years later. They discuss the importance of collaboration with other organizations.

This is a conversation about where a life of service can begin, what it looks like to adapt a national model to a local community, and what "success" actually looks like when you're the one running the shelter.
