Michelle Murphy is Research and Policy Analyst with Social Justice Ireland.

The 19th November 2021 was the first National Safeguarding Day. A day to recognise safeguarding issues and concerns, and what can be done about them. 

There are nine HSE Safeguarding and Protection Teams (SPTs), one in each CHO (Community Healthcare Organisations) throughout Ireland. Each SPT is tasked with co-ordinating consistent responses to concerns of abuse and neglect. In this episode, Colette Bennett chats to Tim Hanly, General Manager of the HSE National Safeguarding Office, about patterns of abuse, the need for structural and legislative reform, and what we, as a society, can practically do.

Michael is a lecturer in political economy at the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice in University College Dublin. His work is focused on urban political economy, in particular the relationship between the financial system and housing, as well as the politics of housing and urban activism. This week, he chats to Susanne Rogers about some aspects of housing affordability in Ireland.

She is the cabinet’s senior political adviser and is in charge, among other things, of the coordination of the European Pillar of Social Rights, the European economic policy coordination and the European Semester, the Social dimension of the Economic and Monetary Union, the Child Guarantee, the Social economy and the relations with the European Parliament.

In her paper for the Social Justice Ireland Annual Social Policy Conference, Santina speaks about the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan and the subsequent action plan. Europe has decided to put social justice, social investments and social resilience at the heart of the recovery. Social rights must drive Europe’s transition towards a green and digital economy and society.
