Social Media Year in Review

Listen Later

Coffey and Tea’s Meg Coffey joined Tony McManus to talk all things social media. Tonight’s chat includes:

ACCC – Facebook & Google
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission earlier this week released landmark findings from a year-long inquiry into digital platforms, declaring that Google and Facebook's substantial market power in digital advertising is hurting traditional publishers.
The regulator proposed a number of measures to curb their dominance, including a new government body to monitor their conduct in the advertising market, and to scrutinise how their secretive algorithms distribute traffic to publishers.
It also wants to create a new ombudsman to monitor consumer complaints about the platforms, toughen privacy regulations and make it harder for the tech giants to collect user data without unambiguous consent.
In its report, the ACCC said the algorithmic selection of news is exposing users to risks of "filter bubbles" and unreliable information that could have flow-on effects for democracy.
McDuling said the ACCC found out of every $100 spent on digital advertising in Australia, $68 flows to Google and Facebook, with Google controlling 94 per cent share of internet searches.
