¿Cómo es el día a día de un diplomático? ¿Cómo es trabajar en países con culturas totalmente diferentes de sus orígenes? ¿Y los bastidores de las negociaciones internacionales entre países?
Hoy la conversación es con Cuauhtémoc Villamar, un ex diplomático mexicano e investigador de los estudios asiáticos que durante décadas trabajó en países como China, Singapur, Tailandia y Canadá.
En el diálogo hablamos sobre sus experiencias culturales en países tan diferentes a México, la carrera de la diplomacia, las relaciones entre la política internacional y la historia (especialmente con los Galeones de Manila, ruta comercial de España que unía América Latina y Asia entre los siglos XVI y XIX) y cómo fue haber trabajado como diplomático de México a China en dos momentos diferentes en este país: en la década de 1980 y en la década de 2010, cuando trabajó como subjefe de la misión diplomática mexicana en China.
Explicación: los Galeones de Manila eran barcos comerciales españoles que cruzaban el Océano Pacífico entre los siglos XVI y XIX, una o dos veces al año, navegando entre Manila en Filipinas y Acapulco en México, entonces Virreinato de la Nueva España.

What does a minister for the environment do day to day? How does Singapore protect the environment? And the challenges to work with environmental and climate topics at the highest level of the government?
In this special episode to celebrate the first birthday of the Social Steps Podcast, Yaacob Ibrahim shares his story of commitment to public service in Singapore and remarkable experiences at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (current Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment).
He talks about his involvement in climate change conferences (2007 Bali, Copenhagen 2009, and Cancun 2011), the intersections of sustainability and technology, the importance of public transportation to a healthier environment, and other crucial aspects of what cities can do to ensure the well-being of their residents.
Yaacob started his career as a Member of Parliament in Singapore, and held several positions at the highest levels of the Government of Singapore. Apart from his work at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. He also served as a Minister in the Ministries of Community Development and Sports (2002 – 2004) and Communications and Information (2011 – 2018).
It's rare to get to speak with someone who has been so close to the highest levels of environmental and climate politics. So, I hope you enjoy this episode.

I'm highly honored to start a new category called 'Women in STEM'. The main goal is to inspire and empower women to get into science, technology, engineering and math.
I'll speak with women who are pursuing STEM degrees or working in the field and discuss their stories, experiences, challenges they face, goals they have, study and career advice.
To kick off this category, I catch up with the environmental scientist and researcher Matilda Odera. After getting a scholarship, she moved from Kenya to the US to study and set up a successful career in the environmental sector.
Matilda talks about how she managed to go to the US, her challenges as an international student, research experiences in graduate school, funding opportunities for prospective graduate students, the importance of networking and why we need more women in environmental science.

Environmental Sociology and Latin American studies are fascinating fields for those willing to investigate the intersection of environmental degradation and other social issues in one of the world's most unequal regions. This interview with my guest, Professor Alessandro Morosin, inaugurates a new category in this Social Steps Podcast. I call this category "Dialogues with the Faculty".
At the beginning of his career, professor Alessandro taught English as a Second Language in Los Angeles public schools, especially for adult migrants from Latin America. The curiosity in understanding what drives Hispanic people to migrate to the United States encouraged Alessandro to investigate this topic in graduate school, beginning what would become an involvement in Environmental Sociology and Latin American studies. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of California-Riverside, Professor Morosin taught one year at the University of San Diego (in California), and currently he teaches at DePauw University in Indiana. He is also a political activist and a member of Alarma, a latin alternative music band that advocates for social and environmental causes.
It is a pleasure to bring his unique perspective on how Environmental Sociology, Latin American studies, and music can help uplift humanity and address social problems.
