One of the secrets for stress reduction is to accept what you cannot control. That’s our starting point today.  

Either you are a practice owner or not, a specialized dentist or a general dentist wanting to start doing specialized work, or maybe a general dentist wanting to delegate certain parts of the work (endodontics, pediatric patients, orthodontics, for example) you have to be able to delegate with trust.

If you are a very good technician that will bring success for sure. Success will bring complexity, and complexity can be the worst thing that can happen to you because it can put your success at risk.

We start by discussing how you can explain to your patients you are sending them to another colleague and tricks on how to do it in an effective way.

In the second part of our conversation we talk about how to achieve a team culture where people hold themselves accountable, rather than have a false accountability attempt forced on them. The result will be enhanced productivity and agility in the face of today's pace of change, leading to individual as well as business growth and success. 

In the end we discuss accountability and the 7 Keys to Developing a Positive Accountability Culture: 

1. Practice what you preach on accountability

2. Effectively communicate your expectations

3. Provide assessments based wholly on facts

4. Delegate control commensurate with accountability

5. Align accountability with organizational objectives

6. Be an advocate and promoter for team members

7. Provide a safe place for difficult issue discussion

We have a question for you: How do you want your dentistry days to be like? Have you ever thought about it?

In this episode we talk about how to start making time for building the dentistry practice you dream about and not get overwhelmed by it. We talk about our experience, discuss real everyday situations and the importance of supportive leadership.

The main idea: start small. Small actions have a big impact.

Here is a practical exercise we propose you to try:

1. Describe your perfect day at the clinic.

Writing down your clinical perfect day could change your dentistry practice. Because you’ll never leave where you are until you figure out where you want to be. The only way we can create a career and lifestyle for ourselves that rocks our world is by getting super clear on what exactly it is we want your clinical day to day life to look like. Every detail. Write down from start to finish what that perfect working day looks like for you.

Why? Because what you think you want and what you actually want may be two totally different things. This exercise will help you get clear on figuring out what you really want. What we actually mean by ‘The Perfect Day’ is a day that inspires you, brings out your best qualities and fits in with the type of dentistry you want to live and practice.

2. Start with just one day in the month.

Now that you know how your perfect day looks like, pick one day in the calendar and schedule it.

Here are the next practical actions: let people at the practice know of your plan for that day and make the necessary arrangements.

3. Make no excuses

4.  Live that day, adjust and repeat.

5. Once you realize, you'll be actually doing two days in a month, and from two days in a month, you'll be doing one day a week.

And you build from there.  That's how transformations are made.
