On March 20, 2025, SoftBank announced its acquisition of Ampere Computing for $6.2 billion, establishing Ampere as a wholly owned subsidiary. Ampere, founded in 2017 and based in Silicon Valley, specializes in AI chips utilizing Arm architecture and has previously raised $814 million from investors including Oracle and Carlyle Group. SoftBank recognizes the potential of the Arm ecosystem, having acquired Arm Holdings for $32 billion in 2016, which went public in 2023 with a market cap of about $124 billion. The acquisition of Ampere supports SoftBank's strategy to expand its AI infrastructure investments. SoftBank is involved in The Stargate Project, aiming to invest $500 billion in AI datacenters over four years, chaired by CEO Masayoshi Son. The Vision Fund is also active again, participating in eight funding rounds this year, leading a $130 million Series C for Terabase Energy and a $120 million round for Cybereason. Other investments include support for Metsera's $215 million Series B and Eruditus Executive Education’s $150 million Series F, as well as an investment in cloud security startup Wiz.
