  • Sojourner's Election History Quiz With S. Pearl Sharp: September 24, 2020
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
Protests broke out across the United States as a secret grand jury in Louisville, Kentucky, did not charge any police officers for the March 13, 2020, killing of Breonna Taylor. Breonna was shot and killed in her own home as police officers were attempting to serve a no-knock warrant. Breonna's boyfriend thought someone was breaking into their home and fired, hitting one police officer. Officers responded with a barrage of bullets that killed Breonna and entered another apartment. Only one officer, Brett Hankison, was charged on three counts of wanted endangerment. Not for killing Breonna, but for threatening the lives of three people by firing bullets that entered their apartment during the operation. The other two officers involved, Johnathan Mattingly and Miles Cosgrove, were not charged.
Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Black Republican praised by Donald Trump, claimed the officers were justified in their use of force. There were over 100 arrests on Wednesday night in Louisville, Kentucky, in response to this shocking ruling. Two police officers were shot, neither receiving life-threatening wounds and police have said an arrest was made. Our guests are Jody David Armour and Stephon Barbour. Jody David Armour is the Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law at the University of Southern California. Stephon Barbour is a videographer, edito, director and activist based in Louisville, Kentucky.
For our weekly Earth Watch, we speak with BJ McManama about genetically engineered trees and Indigenous peoples. BJ has been involved with Indigenous and environmental issues for over 25 years. Beginning in the early 1990s working with WV State agencies on NAGPRA, opposition to mountaintop/strip coal mining & public education.
Also, Sojourners Ballot Box Quiz with S. Pearl Sharp and our weekly Earth Minute presented by Theresa Church of the Global Justice Ecology Project.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: September 25, 2020 - Supreme Court, Election Watch, Breonna Taylor & UN
Today on Sojourner Truth, our weekly roundtable.
The stage is set for a constitutional crisis in the United States. From the Supreme Court shifting to the right following the death of feminist Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to Trump's Attorney General William Barr acting as his personal lawyer, to Donald Trump and his supporters working to undermine the integrity of the upcoming election, there is increasing unease in the United States.
As the United Nations marked its 75th anniversary, Donald Trump gave a bizarre speech at the U.N. General Assembly. Also, where the world's major powers - the U.S., China and Russia - clashed. What is the U.S. standing in the world? How has that shifted under Donald Trump? What are the wider implications?
Also, a spate of vehicles running into Black Lives Matter protesters. The latest incident happened on Thursday night in Los Angeles, California, when a truck hit a woman protester. People are out on the street nationwide following the ruling on Breonna Taylor's murder and that no police officers were charged. And, what is going on in ICE facilities?
Our panelists are Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg and Dr. Gerald Horne.

Today, we bring you part two of our national coverage of a mass assembly hosted by the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The two-hour assembly was entitled, Voting is Power Unleashed: National Moral Monday Mass Assembly and Teach In. If you missed part one of our special, you can listen to it anytime on SoundCloud.com; just search for Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod. The mass poor peoples assembly and teach-in was hosted on September 14, 2020, just weeks away from the upcoming November 2020 election. The first Poor Peoples Campaign was initially called by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. It has now been revived by the Poor Peoples Campaign joint coordinators Bishop Dr. William J. Barber II and the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis.
The PPC fusion approach is centered around the themes of racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nations distorted moral narrative. Participants in this event, Voting is Power Unleashed, include the PPC Coordinating Committees (now in 43 states) and other civic, religious and social justice organizations. Also, cultural activist Jane Fonda, Mark Ruffalo, D.L. Hughley, Erika Alexander, and Charlemagne tha God. Presidential candidates from both major parties were invited. However, only Joe Biden responded, so he was the only one to address the agenda and priorities of poor and low-income people. The event also features Forward Justice, the NAACP legal defense fund, and is part of the M.O.R.E. Campaign, which stands for Mobilizing, Organizing, Registering and Educating people for a movement that votes.
