  • Sam Weinstein On Brexit & UK Political Turmoil
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
Hurricane Dorian is now lashing South Carolina, where there is concern about storm surge and flooding. This, after leaving the Bahamas devastated. In particular, the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. The hurricane stayed over Grand Bahama for more than 41 hours, which is historic. It has caused massive devastation. According to the Bahamian government, at least 20 people thus far have been killed, but that number is expected to rise. Also, there is a list of over 550,000 people who are unaccounted for. We speak with Jeremy Collymore, the Special Advisor on Resilience Planning and Disaster Risk Management to the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. He was the former Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). CDEMA is now mobilizing to respond to the crisis. We also speak with Dr. ChenziRa Davis Kahina, a Caribbean-based educator, cultural heritage artist and administrator, naturopathic therapist, ordained ministerial priestess, community developer and visionary.
Also, the UK is in turmoil as conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, backed by Donald Trump, faces defeat after defeat in Parliament as he tries to push forward on a no-deal Brexit. Our guest is Sam Weinstein, based in London, England. He is active with the Camden branch of Momentum, a regional grassroots network arising out of the movement following the Jeremy Corbyn for Labour Leader campaign. Weinstein was previously based in the United States, where he was an official with the Utility Workers Union of America.
Lastly, our weekly Earth Watch. Why is it that some environmentalists are against a move by the California Tropical Forest Standard? What's the problem? Our guest is Gary Hughes, who has worked for decades on forest, climate and energy issues, and is currently the California Policy Monitor with Biofuelwatch. Hughes will be in Santiago, Chile later this year for events surrounding the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: September 4, 2019 - Part 2 of Daniel Sheehan's "Trajectory of Justice"
Today on Sojourner Truth, we continue our two-part series featuring constitutional and public interest lawyer, public speaker, political activist and educator Daniel Sheehan.
Sheehan serves as Chief Counsel of the Romero Institute, where he has advocated on behalf of the Lakota People's Law Project. He also teaches at UCSC (the University of California Santa Cruz), delivering lectures on climate change, the potential impeachment of Donald J. Trump and the Standing Rock Movement against the Dakota Access pipeline, among others.
Today, you will hear Part 2 of Sheehan's Trajectory of Justice course offered in 2019, focusing on the Robert Mueller report and the Special Counsel investigation. The Special Counsel investigation was an investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections and incriminating links between Donald Trumps inner circle and Russian officials. It was conducted by special prosecutor Robert Mueller from May 2017 to March 2019. Since July 2016, the FBI covertly investigated activities by Russian operatives and by members of Trumps presidential campaign, using the code name Crossfire Hurricane.
In May 2017, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Within eight days, following a call to action by Democratic lawmakers and revelations by Comey, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller, a former FBI director, to take over the FBI's investigation. The investigation officially concluded on March 22, 2019, when the Mueller Report was submitted to Attorney General Bob Barr, who many say misrepresented the reports findings. By July 2019, Mueller testified to Congress that Trump could be charged with obstruction of justice (or other crimes) after he left office. Since then, efforts to impeach Trump based on the Mueller investigation have floundered. Today, Sheehan discusses what the Mueller investigation missed and what he thinks is next for the future of Trump and the United States.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: September 3, 2019 - Pt. 1 of Daniel Sheehan's "Trajectory of Justice"
Today, we kick off a two-part series featuring constitutional and public interest lawyer, public speaker, political activist and educator Daniel Sheehan. Sheehan is currently Chief Counsel of the Romero Institute, where his focus is the Lakota People's Law Project. He also teaches at UCSC (the University of California Santa Cruz) on topics such as U.S. politics, climate change, the potential impeachment of Donald Trump and the Standing Rock Movement against the Dakota Access pipeline, among others.
Today, you will hear Part 1 of Sheehan's Trajectory of Justice course offered in 2019 at UCSC, focusing on oil, money and power and their impact on Indigenous and environmental struggles. Across the United States as well as in Canada, efforts are being made to criminalize protests against the construction of oil and gas pipelines that harm the environment. As of June 2019, seven U.S. states have passed laws that worsen punishments for environmental activists planning or participating in protests against such pipelines. These laws elevate misdemeanors to felonies while significantly escalating civil and criminal penalties. Since 2017, Republican lawmakers have proposed laws criminalizing these protests in at least 18 states. At least six more states are considering such laws. Sheehan also dives into the role of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's governments in tapping into oil reserves on the Arctic shelf and its environmental consequences.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: August 30, 2019 - Labor Day Special
Today on Sojourner Truth, our annual Labor Day Special!
On Monday, September 2, the nation marks the annual Labor Day holiday. While many use this time to mark the end of summer, we must not forget to honor the workers -- waged and unwaged -- who make our lives possible. The food we eat. The homes we live in. The computers and smartphones people are increasingly addicted to. Electrical workers. Gas workers. The builders. The masons. The sanitation workers. The truckers. The teachers. The moms. The farm workers. Documented and undocumented. Without these mostly invisible hands -- invisible because a lot of us depend on them, but often they are working behind the scenes -- life as we know it and live it would not be possible.
Today, we spend the hour honoring workers. In particular, we focus on the workers under threat due to automation. And, we want to honor the organizers and participants of one of the largest labor parades west of the Mississippi River. The 40th annual Labor Day Parade hosted by the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition, with its theme being "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."
Our guests are David Serrato, member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Gary Herrera, Vice President of ILWU Local 13 and Larry Barragan, a member of the United Steel Workers Local 675 and Chair of the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition.
