  • Sojourner Truth Radio: April 16, 2019 - Africa Watch, US & European Progressivism, Migrant Children
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
We return to what is happening to migrant asylum seekers. The latest threat to the Flores agreement and The Donald threatening to send undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities. Our guest is Peter Schey, Executive Director of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law.
Also, for our Sojourner Truth Africa Watch, the 30-year leader of Sudan was deposed by the military following a general uprising in the country with protesters demanding an end to austerity measures and for President Omar al-Bashir to step down. A military government is in place and although they have promised to establish civilian rule, Sudans overwhelmingly young population have their doubts. Meanwhile, al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity for atrocities overseen by his government in Darfur. After years of fighting, Sudan was balkanized and divided in two with the formation of South Sudan. A row between the north (ruled by al-Bashir) and the newly-formed South Sudan broke out over oil-rich fields, which got taken over by the South. al-Bashir's Sudan faced U.S. sanctions, which along with the loss of oil revenue, led to an economic crisis in the country. So, who are the protesters who have vowed to stay in the streets until a civilian government is formed? Whats at stake in Sudan? Meanwhile, what some are calling an Arab Spring has spread to Algeria, where long-time President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been forced to step down. Whats at stake? Also, the U.S.-backed government in Tripoli, Libya put in place after the U.S.-backed overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi is under threat with serious fighting threatening the capital city. Whats going on? Our guest, Dr. Gerald Horne, breaks all of this down for us.
Finally, the growing alliance between left-leaning organizations and tendencies in the U.S. and Europe. Our guest is Alan Minsky, Executive Director of the Progressive Democrats of America.

  • News Headlines: April 12, 2019
Today on Sojourner Truth, our weekly roundtable discussion.
We discuss the implications and consequences of the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He was taken out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London by British police, where he lived for the last seven years. He is awaiting possible extradition to the United States, where he is being charged with conspiring to crack a code that would allow illegal access to a Pentagon computer. Some are expecting that more charges will be filed by the United States against Assange. Meanwhile, U.K. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said that Assange should not be extradited. What does the shift to the right of governments in Central and Latin America have to do with the arrest of Assange? In particular, the change of government in Ecuador?
Also, we return to turmoil in the Middle East with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu winning re-election by forming a coalition with extreme right-wing forces. What will this mean for Palestinians, Iran and the entire region? What role did Donald Trump's administration play in his re-election? Continued attacks with charges of "anti-semitism" against Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and moves by the U.S. Congress to equate the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement against Israeli policies towards Palestinians with "anti-semitism."
Why are some calling U.S. Attorney General Bob Barr "Trump's mouthpiece" and "the most dangerous man in America?" What has happened to what we are taught are supposed to be checks and balances among the three branches of government? Are they broken or functioning as outlined in the U.S. Constitution? Why should any of us believe in the ability of the federal government to implement these checks and balances? Does all of this call into question what democracy actually means in the United States today?
Our panelists are Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg and Dr. Gerald Horne.
