  • Taz On Cyntoia Brown's Clemency
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
The U.S. government remains shut down over Donald Trumps border wall. Last night, Trump, in a prime time nationally-televised address, used racism, fear, divisiveness and lies to make his case for a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. The Democrats are saying Trumps war is immoral. But what is the reality? What is happening to migrants at the border? What is the explanation for the deaths of two migrant children, with the latest taking place on Christmas Eve? Our guest is Mexico-based journalist and writer Jose Luis Granados Ceja.
And for our weekly Campaigners for Black Lives segment, we speak with Taz of Nashville Black Lives Matter. We discuss the case of Cyntoia Brown, who was given clemency for killing a man who had bought her for sex. Cyntoia was forced into prostitution by a pimp.
And Harold Meyerson, editor of The American Prospect, joins us on California's new governor, Gavin Newsom.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: January 8, 2019 - LA Teachers Strike, Congo, Attacks On Israel Critics
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
Los Angeles is facing its first teachers strike since 1989. If negotiations continue to fail, the strike will start on Thursday, January 10. The teachers movement is part of a national movement known as Red for Ed. The Los Angeles action will follow successful teachers strikes in mainly GOP-majority states, known as red states, that swept the nation in 2018 including in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina and parts of Washington State. What are the demands of teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District? Have they won any concessions from the school district and if so, are they enough to stop a strike? Our guest is Cecily Myart-Cruz, a teacher and Vice President of United Teachers of Los Angeles/NEA.
Also, we return to The Congo where a mini-genocide has been taking place over the last decade, and where a presidential election is in limbo. Our guest is Assumpta Oturu, host of Spotlight Africa on Pacifica Radios KPFK.
And a bipartisan Senate bill to punish supporters of the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement in the U.S. is being introduced. What are the implications of this bill? How does it affect defenders of Palestinian human rights? Our guest is Josh Ruebner, Policy Director of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: January 4, 2019 - Roundtable Discussion
Today on Sojourner Truth, I am back in studio and want to take a moment to wish you all good things for the coming year. I appreciate you, the listener, our top priority. I also want to thank you for your support and encouragement, which has made Sojourner Truth a top show on this station. We know you can switch the dial when Sojourner Truth comes on, but so many of you do not. On behalf of the Sojourner Truth team, we thank you.
Even in these scary and divisive times, I am hopeful that we will see movements for change in the U.S. and around the world coming together to build the kind of power needed to stop the prioritizing of war, occupation and profit over the care of people and the environment.
Today on our first Round Table of the new year, our panelists will choose three areas they want to highlight and discuss, the first two from 2018, and the third on looking forward to 2019 and 2020.
Our panelists are: Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg, Dr. Gerald Horne

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: January 3, 2019 - Impact of Homelessness on Women and Children
On Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, hundreds of people attended the Poor People's Hearing on the Impact of Homelessness on Women and Children in Skid Row in Los Angeles, California. Skid Row is a famous community of unhoused people who have been organizing around housing justice and other issues. The event, co-hosted by the California Poor Peoples Campaign and the Los Angeles Community Action Network (known as LA CAN), was one of many in a series of Poor Peoples Hearings.
The Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is a multi-racial movement fighting the 4 pillars of evil: poverty, racism, a war economy and environmental devastation. LA CAN is a grassroots organization based on Skid Row that works in partnership with people in poverty to build political power and hold elected officials accountable.
According to the 2018 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, women and girls account for 31 percent of the nearly 53,000 homeless people in L.A. County; 9 percent of those experiencing homelessness are children.
Today, we hear directly from women and children impacted by poverty and homelessness who spoke at the December 1 event.
