  • Miguel Tinker Salas On The Life & Legacy Of Antonio Gonzalez
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
Tensions between Israel and Palestinians are once again on the rise, following a botched Israeli commando raid in Gaza. Our guest is Ali Abunimah, Director of Electronic Intifada, an independent online news publication focusing on Palestine.
Also, our weekly Campaigners for Black Lives segment. We turn our attention back to Georgia's Governor's race following congressional elections. The Democratic candidate, Stacey Abrams, still hopes to become the first Black woman to be governor of that southern state. Her challenge to her GOP opponent, Brian Kemp, continues as she is not conceding. Our guest is Tiffany Smith with Black Lives Matter Atlanta.
We also remember Pacifica Radio's Antonio Gonzalez, who has passed away. He was the President of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and the William C. Velasquez Institute. He died on Sunday, November 11. As we remember Antonio, we speak with historian, author and professor Miguel Tinker Salas.

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: November 9, 2018 - Roundtable On Elections, Sessions, Mueller & Violence
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
The Democrats have regained the House, Republicans still have control of the Senate. What are the wider national and international implications?
The race for Governor in Georgia and Florida, both Black candidates seems headed for a runoff. Both Stacy Abrams and Andrew Gillum candidates in those races are Black, both were bombarded with racist attacks by their opponents and by Donald Trump. While many are saying that the midterm elections were not about its the economy stupid but its about race stupid, Bernie Sanders has gotten involved in the controversy with his comment that white voters uncomfortable with voting for a Black candidate are not racist. Go figure.
Meanwhile in Arizona, the Democrat Kyrsten Sinema has taken a slim lead ahead of her Republican opponent in the Senate seat, so the Senate is not quite settled. Republicans voted for an indicted criminal Duncan Hunter in California and in Nevada, Republicans they voted for a dead man.
A slew of women were elected, most of them Democrats, including Muslim, Native American and LGBTQ. In Florida, a measure that will allow 1.3 million felons to vote won, and a series of progressive initiatives won ranging from fight for 15, legalizing marijuana and expanding Medicaid won in some red states. In Oregon sanctuary was protected and in Massachusetts transgender rights were upheld.
Trump has fired Jefferson Sessions, the U.S. Attorney General, and replaced him with Matt Whitaker, the former deputy of Sessions. His appointment was controversial out of the Gate as he is negative on the Mueller investigation and even as Mueller is closing in on Trump and his family, Trump is desperate to either shut down the investigation or at least starve it of resources so it cannot function. Sessions did everything policy wise that Trump wanted, but the one thing he did not do was to stop the Mueller investigation. Are Trumps actions another example of interference in the investigation?
Also, Trump continued his attack on journalists, singling out journalists of color for special attack, sending several messages to his base as white supremacist in chief. He attacked Latinx Jim Acosta whose White House press credentials have now been revoked. He also attacked two Black women journalists, telling one of them to sit down and telling the other she is asking a racist question. This while Trump gives a pass to Saudi Arabia who are responsible for killing and cutting up a Washington Post reporter in their embassy in Turkey.
And yet another mass shooting, this one in Southern California. 13 people were killed including the shooter. The shooter had served as a US Marine, he died from a self-inflicted wound. The mother of one of those killed said don't send me your thoughts and prayers, send me gun control. What can elected officials do about gun control, post-election?

  • Sojourner Truth Radio: November 8, 2018 - California Shooting, Sessions Firing, Yemen, Biofuels
    Today on Sojourner Truth:
Yet another mass shooting in the United States - this time, it occured not too far from Pacifica Radio's KPFK studios, in Thousand Oaks, California, at the Borderline Bar and Grill. This happened just last night, Wednesday, November 7. Media are reporting that 12 are dead. The shooter, Ian David Long, is dead. At least one of the people killed, Sgt. Ron Helus, was a first responder.
Yesterday, Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jefferson Sessions amid Trump's concerns about his loyalty. You may recall that Trump has been very upset with Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation. This move is seen by many as a way to undermine and undercut the Mueller investigation. So again, Trump interfering with that investigation and raising all kinds of questions related to ethics. The man he has named to temporarily replace Sessions, Matthew Whitaker, has been critical of the Mueller investigation. With all of that in mind, protests are being planned across the United States. It is predicted that 700-900 protests will happen, a lot of them at 5 p.m. today. Additionally, just yesterday, the Trump administration took on CNN journalist Jim Acosta and two Black women whom he derided in a White House press conference. That ended with Acosta's press pass to the White House being revoked. The journalists Trump has been after are journalists of color: Jim Acosta, who is Latino, and two Black women journalists. We speak with cultural critic and journalist Dr. Henry Giroux to discuss all of this.
Also today, we return to the Saudi-led, U.S.-supported war in Yemen, which has left tens of thousands dead and is now the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Our guest is Dr. Shireen Al-Adeimi.
And, for our weekly Earth Watch, we're joined by the co-director of Biofuel Watch, Rachel Smolker, to discuss the harms of biofuel and possible solutions.
