August 22nd will mark the beginning of the 20th year of President Clinton controversial welfare reform bill known as TANF. Since TANF, poverty and extreme poverty has increased for single mothers and their children, single mothers are the fastest growing population going to prison and along with their children the homeless.

Welfare reform does not recognize the caregiving work that mothers and other family caregivers do as having value to society. It takes away the right of the most impoverished mothers to raise their own children and instead mandates them to take no or low waged jobs outside the home. Its aim was to cut welfare rolls, not to reduce poverty.

Our guest is Felicia Kornbluh, history and women’s studies professor at the University of Vermont. She is the author of “The Battle for Welfare Rights: politics and Poverty in Modern America.”

He was a member of the George Jackson 6 and his supporters claim that he was set up by prison authorities. Who was Hugo Pinell and why were prison authorities so fearful of him? Wednesday: German lawmakers have approved a third Greek bailout on Wednesday. The controversial deal loaded with austerity measures was earlier approved by Greek lawmakers despite rebellion in the ranks of anti-austerity lawmakers within Syriza, the ruling party. They are accusing the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of being a sellout. But the IMF is balking at the deal saying that Greece needs more debt relief in order for the plan to work.

Just last month, Greeks voted an overwhelming no to proposed austerity measures that were being proposed by the group known as the troika, the European Central Bank, the EU and the IMF. But the Greek Prime Minister who won election as the anti-austerity candidate did an about turn and supported the Troika’s austerity measures. Our guests are investigative journalist and filmmaker John Pilger and economist James Henry.

And on August 9th a controversial parliamentary election took place in Haiti. The election was marred by violence, accusations of ballot stuffing, intimidation of potential voters and low voter turnout all to the advantage of the ruling Martelly government. Michel Martelly is known for his previous ties to the brutal Baby Doc Duvalier dictatorship. Our guests are Yvon kernizan who was on the ground in Haiti on election day, and journalist and film maker and Haiti expert Kevin Pina.
