  • Sojourner Truth Radio: April 9 2021 - Roundtable On Gun Violence, Chauvin Trial, World Politics
Today on Sojourner Truth, our weekly roundtable. Our guests are Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg and Dr. Gerald Horne.
Amidst 18 people killed in mass shootings in the United States in just the past month, President Joe Biden takes on the pro-gun lobby, announcing new but limited measures on gun control and has named David Chipman to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Will this move widen the urban-rural divide when it comes to the right to own guns? What populations have stepped up their gun purchases?
A medical doctor who is an expert on breathing shredded the defense of Derek Chauvin, who is on trial for the murder of George Floyd. In graphic testimony, Dr. Martin Tobin made it clear that Floyd did not die of a drug overdose, which Chauvin's lawyers are claiming. Instead, Dr. Tobin said, he died from a lack of oxygen, caused from Chauvin's actions in restraining Floyd.
Thus far, the vote to unionize Amazon workers seems to be going in the direction against unionization. Will this hold amidst votes being challenged? What are the wider implications?
The International Criminal Court has ruled that Israeli actions against Palestinian protesters in Gaza can be investigated. Also, they said, there were crimes on both sides. Benjamin Netanyahu has said they will not recognize the International Criminal Court ruling. This, as Biden reinstates aid to Palestinians that was cut by Donald Trump, but is standing with Netanyahu on the position against the Court. Also, tension grows between Russia and the United States over the buildup of Russian troops on Ukraine's border.
