Today on Sojourner Truth:
An update on COVID-19, particularly as it impacts the Navajo people. The Navajo Nation, which includes parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, has more COVID-19 cases per capita than any state in the U.S., according to data released by the Navajo Nation Sunday. Earlier this week, the Navajo Nation reported 149 new cases, bringing the total number to 3,204. Two additional COVID-19-related deaths have also been reported, bringing the total number of fatalities to 102. Our guest is Ethyl Branch, the former Attorney General for Navajo Nation and founder of the Navajo and Hopi Families COVID-19 relief fund.
For our Campaigners for Black Lives series, we focus on a spate of police killings of young Black people that have taken place or come to light over the past few weeks. The killing with the highest media profile is that of Ahmaud Arbery. Although Ahmaud was killed by a white former police officer and his son while he was out jogging, no charges were brought against his two killers until a video emerged that clearly shows Ahmaud was hunted down and killed. Additionally, in Indianapolis, there have been a series of three police killings that took place within a matter of eight hours. On March 13, a young Black woman who worked as an EMT in Louisville and was an aspiring nurse was shot eight times and killed by police. She was in her apartment at her time. Our guest is Jessica Louise, a member of Indy 10 Black Lives Matter. She is based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
On Tuesday, May 12, the U.S. Supreme Court heard over three hours of debate on the powers of the presidency in relation to Donald Trumps tax returns. The session focused on whether his executive powers shield him from prosecutors and elected officials working to publicize information about his past business dealings, which many believe to be fraudulent. Many want his tax returns released. Our guest is Marjorie Cohn, professor emerita at Thomas Jefferson School of Law where she taught for 25 years. The former president of the National Lawyers Guild and criminal defense attorney is a legal scholar and political analyst who writes books and articles, and lectures throughout the world about human rights, US foreign policy, and the contradiction between the two.
