Dr. Christopher Yuan is the author of Holy Sexuality and the Gospel: Sex, Desire, and Relationships Shaped by God’s Grand Story. He spoke during the seventh session of the AALC Conference. His talk was titled, “Sexual Identity: False Identity.”

In his talk, Christopher Yuan articulated a biblical view of sexuality through the narrative of his personal transformation from an agnostic gay man to a Bible professor. He shared how one of the most important things when engaging with our LGB friends is how sexuality has become the core of our being: “Being gay” means “This is who I am.”

But how does the Bible communicate who we are? Dr. Yuan articulates the correct understanding of personhood through the lens of Scripture—particularly the image of God and the doctrine of sin—and explains the consequences of an incorrect understanding of who we are.

Gaps to Care and Counseling in the Asian-American Church: Envisioning a Multi-Level System of Care and Counseling

Monica Kim, Ph.D., is a Christian counselor who has taught counseling courses as an associate faculty at CCEF and a lecturer at WTS. She spoke at the seventh session of the AALC Conference. Her talk was titled, “Gaps to Care and Counseling in the Asian-American Church: Envisioning a Multi-Level System of Care and Counseling.” 

In her talk, Monica Kim talked about the growing numbers of Asian American parishioners who are seeking and needing care and counseling. This increase has highlighted significant gaps regarding care and counseling in the Asian American church. Her talk explored some of these gaps and envisioned a more systematic process for care and counseling in the church.

Kim Kira, the primary teaching elder at Lighthouse Church and SOLA Council member, led the sixth session of the AALC Conference. His exhortative message was titled “Gospel Ministry: More than Evangelism.”

In his talk, Kim Kira reminded church leaders that the gospel is not just about changing our eternal destination but changing our hearts. So he exhorted them to develop a culture of care and counseling within their churches. By doing so, church members could help one another find help and hope in Christ “as we see our sin and suffering clearly, but see the gospel clearest of all.”
