"What does God want from people -- from you, from me, from us from the church? What does he want from us in this present moment in history? Here's the first thing: to see what’s wrong and to right the wrongs."
As part of our mission to equip the local church and Asian American Christians, we are posting sermon excerpts, devotions, and prayers from our SOLA Council members concerning racism and injustice. We hope that these words would be challenging and encouraging to believers as we fight against the sin of racism.
This is an excerpt from a sermon and a special church statement given by Rev. David Larry Kim at Harvest Church in Orlando. You can listen to the rest of the sermon here: https://youtu.be/AIB3GE7zZPA

"Christian people, take a stand against racism and injustice. Not because it's popular or unpopular, not because it's political, not because it's opportunistic, but because God Himself made every human being in His own image."

How should Asian American Christians begin the conversation around race and racism? How should we talk about race in the church? How does our Asian-ness fit into this dialogue? Do we have hope for change?
To help answer these questions, the SOLA Network hosted a conversation with Pastor Bryan Loritts, Dr. Alexander Jun, and SOLA Editor Hannah Chao on June 4, 2020. We hope their words help bring clarity and wisdom to Christians and churches so that we can be untied by the blood of Christ and be examples of racial reconciliation to the world.

During a time in which many churches have been forced to switched over to online services, a book called Analog Church might seem irrelevant. But author Jay Kim’s book is incredibly timely, as he carefully addresses both the challenges and opportunities churches face in this digital age.
To talk more about the obstacles churches face in this new era, SOLA Council member Steve Chang interviewed Jay Kim over Zoom. They discussed the downsides of the digital world, the importance of community and the local church, as well as what type of service Jay is planning for his church, once they can meet again.
We hope this conversation helps facilitate discussions about the importance of incarnational community within our local churches.
Jay Kim is a pastor in the Silicon Valley of California and the author of Analog Church. He also serves on the leadership team of the ReGeneration Project, where he co-hosts the ReGeneration Podcast. Some of his written work has been featured in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, Relevant Magazine, Mission Alliance, and other publications. He lives in the Silicon Valley with his wife Jenny and their two children.
Steve Chang is the founding and senior pastor of Living Hope Community Church. Steve is a graduate of UCLA (B.S. in Computer Engineering), Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.) and Talbot School of Theology (D.Min.). He feels blessed to live with “the three most beautiful women in the world”, his wife Hannah and his two daughters, Christine and Janice. Steve serves as the Council Chairman of SOLA Network.

One of the consequences of COVID-19 has been an increase in visits to pornographic websites. Viewership has increased for several factors, including people being stuck at home and the fact that it is an outlet for those who feel isolated and lonely.
How can Christians and the church better understand sex addiction and pornography so that we can help those who are afflicted? How can those who are struggling with this addiction get help?
These were the topics covered in a conversation between Tim St. John, SOLA Editorial Board member and counseling pastor at Lighthouse Community Church, and Roy Kim, certified sex addiction therapist and licensed marriage and family therapist.
Tim St. John and Roy Kim talked about how to address pornography use and how to support people who need help.
We also encourage you to check out Roy Kim’s podcast on sex addiction: SA Speakeasy. "This podcast is for men and women who struggle with a sex addiction, yet don't feel ready to talk about it or seek treatment.”

On Friday, President Donald Trump said that churches were essential and called on governors to allow them to reopen them. In addition, earlier this month, a group of California pastors announced that they would reopen their doors on May 31, whether or not they had government permission. This decision is part of a larger discussion surrounding how churches should function during the pandemic. (Editor’s Note: This interview was recorded before President Trump’s announcement, so they do not comment on his remarks.)
To discuss whether or not churches should reopen, SOLA Editorial Board member Daniel K. Eng moderated a Zoon discussion between three Californian lead pastors -- Thomas Hwang from Gospel Life Mission Church, P.J. Tibayan from Bethany Baptist Church in Bellflower, and Hanley Liu from First Chinese Baptist Church in Walnut.
During this conversation, they talk about what it means to love their neighbors, submit to authority, and religious freedom. We hope this conversation will spark healthy discussions within your church as we weather this pandemic together.
