In today's Gospel lesson from Matthew, Jesus tells his followers, "What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them...Whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body...But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them." Pastor Larry Wagner of Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks, California takes his sermon from these words, talking about how easy it is to get caught up in rules and regulations, like whether it's okay to play cards. But Jesus wants us to focus on bigger things, like helping people who are suffering illness, loneliness, sadness, hunger or lack of safety. He also talks about the irrevocability of the gifts of the spirit.
