Jen Kinney wanted to be a strong, independent woman. She had just split up with her long-term partner, and she felt a powerful need to prove that she could meet her own needs.

So she decided to take herself backpacking. Alone. 

What happened to her out in the mountains did not make her feel strong or capable. At least not right away. But the trip did leave her with an important life lesson — a new understanding of what it means to take care of yourself.
