Many hundreds of thousands of human beings and their environment have been contaminated by radioactive fallout. Environmental crime is among the most profitable illegal activities worldwide. After drug trafficking and human trafficking, it is the third-largest criminal business sector in the world. Illegal deforestation, banned mining, the smuggling of protected species, fake CO₂ certificates and many other environmental crimes generate up to 281 billion dollars in profits annually. This is an estimate by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Interpol from 2021. The actual figures are likely to be higher. The extent of unreported crime is poorly understood. The scale of the problem is growing by five to seven per cent each year.
