Solving Life’s Next Chapter with Kim Kubsch

Kim is a business woman and also is a volunteer for Neighbors Who Care. Her business, Joyful Downsizing, is celebrating four years. She has helped many Sun Lakes and East Valley folks live happier with less as well as coordinating moves, estate clearing, and everyday downsizing.

Kim calls her business, Joyful Downsizing, because as much as possible, her goal is to make all of these services stress-free and JOYFUL! 

Many people have lived in their homes for years…sometimes decades, and if you have not moved recently, navigating the process is different. Kim helps her clients through whatever process and stage of life they are in.

Kim has lived in the retirement community of Sun Lakes for 16 years. She has a good following after years of helping retired clients learn and practice Tai Chi for better, safer movement. Kim also offers her wisdom in her monthly article in The Splash monthly newspaper.

Planning for transition from medical locations is best handled BEFORE it’s needed. Lori and Kerri explain how care management happens when a fall happens and they need help while they heal. Sante has 24-hour coverage and multiple layers of assistance to assure safety is maintained and care is consistent giving all patients the best circumstances to heal. Kerri explained to be eligible for the benefit of rehabbing there, people need a daily skilled nursing need to attend. Tours are available anytime and often decisions are made last minute so to help folks feel ready, they encourage families to stop by and get acquainted with a tour.

Episode With Hosts Lydia Wietsma, NextHome Elite Realty, and Sheryl Keeme, Neighbors Who Care

One concern today: Isolation. It’s healthier to smoke 15 cigarettes a day and be an alcoholic than to isolate yourself. Tawnya said the things we did during COVID were not our best choices, so isolation has been brought more to the fore since then. Her learning of isolation came through mandates when she became a warden forcing people to stay in places they did not want to be. Socialization must happen for 7 to 21 hours a week to simply exist. For children and elderly, attaining this can be difficult. Zoom or Facetime is better than nothing, but as we are connected in person, our immune system becomes stronger when we are physically together. Tawnya gives helpful action steps to connect, and volunteering is one of them. Sheryl also piggy-backed on Tawnya’s message to share how flexible volunteering with Neighbors Who Care is.

Aging happens, ready or not. As humans, our next chapter will be lived differently than our previous chapter of life which could have been career-driven or child-driven, or both. Yet, as older age comes for us, we can be ready for it and prepared, or we can just let it happen and hope for the best. Lydia and Sheryl explain in this premier show of Solving Life’s Next Chapter about what listeners can expect to hear on subsequent episodes.

Finally, Sheryl shares details about the special Sun Lakes/South Chandler agency known as Neighbors Who Care, a volunteer care-giving organization helping seniors. Around for 30 years, Neighbors Who Care recruits volunteers, offering a very flexible system of volunteering in several different ways where people can choose what they want to do, when they want to do it, and how often. In this portion, Sheryl explains the 13 different services they offer including Neighbors Who Care’s dinner delivery program, transportation for medical, errands, and shopping, emergency financial assistance, free respite care, and socialization. You’ll be calling to volunteer after hearing about this amazing agency!

In today's episode of "Solving Lifes Next Chapter", we speak with Andi Ravenscroft, LNHA, CDAL Director of Client Relations with NOD Specialists, and Bernie Wahl with Vikor Scientific biotechnology company; both have been on the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic and other infectious diseases.  They bring us up-to-date information for the families of Arizona and their Senior loved ones. 
Bernie explains that this particular virus has changed and we have learned so much more than when we first were introduced to it months ago. The information is changing week by week, day by day and sometimes even hour by hour. 
Both Bernie and Andi explain that the best way to help prevent the virus from spreading is by using the CDC guidelines of washing your hands often, not touching your face, keeping a mask on in public, and keeping social distance. 
We learn that the virus needs a keyhole to get into the body and that is through the nasal cavity.  It then goes into the lungs and causes respiratory issues.   
Bernie's company has been giving a test for COVID, and although there haven't been enough test kits throughout the country, the labs do not want to have "Fear testing".  The testing that is currently being administered are for Seniors 65+ of age and have compromised immune systems with the signs of the respiratory problems.   The test is a nasal swab and takes 24 hours to find out if you are positive or negative.  Bernie's company also tests for 22 viruses which include 15 bacteria and 1 fungus, because the company has discovered that 79.1% of positive patients have other viruses or bacteria along with COVID. Having the panel of testing is beneficial to the patients because some of these other viruses or fungi that come with COVID can be cured with antibiotics even if there is no cure for COVID.  COVID itself has to run through your body and your own immune system needs to fight it off.
Andi explains to us how to best protect your Senior loved ones within Senior communities.  Social distancing is best if you live with a Senior or if your Senior lives in a community with other Seniors.   Andi explains that we need to ask our Senior communities what they are doing to protect our loved ones?  what can we do as a family to help?  What is the protocol for your community if someone is positive?  How are you keeping my loved one safe from employees that are coming and going?   As Andi explains the virus can live on a surface for up to 3 days, so washing door handles and countertops is really important. 
Another fact that Andi has explained that some of the symptoms of the virus for some patients have a lack of taste and smell.  So keep an eye out for your senior loved ones with some of these systems.  Protection is your best bet for a healthy living whether that is living at home with a Senior or living in a Senior community.

Keeping safe during this time is so important and Andi reminds us we are part of the solution such as social distancing and not touching your face, and there are many resources for you and your loved one.  If you or someone you love have symptoms and want to get tested, speak to your health care provider
