  • Nolan Countdown Part 6 - The Dark Knight

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown. Each week in the lead up to Christopher Nolan's latest film, Tenet, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through Christopher Nolan's full filmography in chronological order, starting from his humble beginnings making "budget" films like Following and Memento, all the way to his most recent days making mega-blockbusters like his Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. This time, Jay Habib has actually seen these films (quite a few of them, quite a few times actually), but there will be fresh takes, crazy theories, and deep conversations about one of the most interesting auteur filmmakers of this generation all along the way. Join us each week!

On part 6 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay take a look back at what some (maybe even many) consider the greatest superhero film of all-time: Christopher Nolan's sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight. Set roughly a year after the events of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight sees Christian Bale return as the caped crusader, who continues the fight - alongside Gary Oldman's Jim Gordon and the new District Attorney, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) - against organized crime in Gotham. With the mob's backs against the wall, Gotham's crime families turn to an upstart criminal mastermind, played by Heath Ledger and known simply as The Joker, who makes them an offer they simply can't refuse: an offer to kill Batman, in exchange for half of the mob's money. As a self-proclaimed agent of chaos, Joker begins to wreak absolute havoc across the city, in an attempt to make Batman turn himself in and reveal his true identity. Bale's Bruce Wayne has other ideas, however, and with the help of Gordon, Dent, Alfred (Michael Caine), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and a re-cast Rachel Dawes (now Maggie Gyllenhaal), Batman must juggle stopping The Joker, putting the mob behind bars, and his own personal identity as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. The countdown trio discusses more topics than ever this time around, including whether Ledger's turn as The Joker is an all-time great villain performance (not to mention whether this rendition of The Joker is the all-time best character as well), how good that score is from Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, the multitude of themes present throughout the film, and a load of other topics that you won't want to miss.

  • Nolan Countdown Part 5 - The Prestige

On part 5 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay take a look back at Christopher Nolan's 2006 ~magical~ psychological thriller, The Prestige. Starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as two rival magicians - the more working-class Borden and the more aristocratic Angier respectively - in late-19th century London, The Prestige follows the two magicians' careers, first as fellow apprentices of John Cutter, a renowned stage ingenieur played by Michael Caine. However, when one of their usual magic tricks goes wrong, Angier's wife is unable to escape the water tank used as part of the trick and drowns. Angier blames Borden for his wife's death, as he believes Borden tied a more complicated knot around her wrists, and the two become bitter rivals. What follows is a series of escalating tricks, one-ups, and showdowns with costs and outcomes that are constantly rising, all of which leads to a finale with a twist that has come to be expected from a more experimental Nolan film, like this one. With a supporting cast of Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, David Bowie, and Andy Serkis to complement Bale, Jackman, and Caine, The Prestige weaves a narrative that ultimately comes down to its ending, its prestige, and the countdown trio give their thoughts on all the technical aspects, the performances, the characters, and yes, the twist ending.

  • Nolan Countdown Part 4 - Batman Begins

On part 4 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit the first entry in what would eventually become Christopher Nolan's trilogy of Batman films: the 2005 superhero film Batman Begins. Batman Begins at the time was a fresh take on the origin story of Bruce Wayne, Gotham's famous caped crusader, portrayed by Christian Bale, as he goes on a 7-year odyssey to find himself and his calling, 14 years after the double-murder of his parents by a street thug named Joe Cool in a back alley of Gotham. Bruce's odyssey takes him to the far reaches of the mountains of Bhutan in South Asia, where he finds and trains with the mysterious organization called The League of Shadows, only to question and rebel against their plan to destroy Gotham, which has become too corrupt to save by their measure. The remainder of Batman Begins sees Bruce return to his hometown of Gotham and to his butler, Alfred, played by Micheal Caine, and resolves himself to fighting mafia kingpin, Carmine Falcone, played by Tom Wilkinson, using his newly learned tactics and trainings, a brand new vigilante identity, and some sweet new tools, thanks to Wayne Enterprises's R&D division and Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox. Batman won't be able to take down Falcone, as well as new-on-the-scene fear-mongerer, Scarecrow, played by Cillian Murphy, alone, and will require the help of Alfred; Fox; his childhood friend and love interest, Rachel Dawes, played by Katie Holmes; and Gary Oldman's James Gordon, one of the few incorruptible Gotham City police officers. The countdown trio give their thoughts on how well Nolan's initial take on Batman holds up, the evolving technical aspects of his filmmaking, and whether the performances and the set pieces of Batman Begins continue to improve.

  • Nolan Countdown Part 3 - Insomnia

On part 3 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit what some people consider to be one of the most mainstream or "straightforward" films in Nolan's oeuvre (maybe a final proof-point to show the major film studios that they can trust him with hundreds of millions of dollars and a high-value IP, like say Batman): Insomnia, the 2002 psychological detective thriller American remake of a 1997 Norwegian film. Nolan has the significant talent of Oscar-winning Al Pacino, Oscar-winning Robin Williams, and Oscar-winning Hilary Swank at his disposal, and makes use of them respectively as Will Dormer, a troubled veteran LAPD detective on loan to a small fishing town called Nightmute, Alaska to help solve the murder of a local teen; Walter Finch, a reclusive, local Alaskan writer who the murdered teen had a secret relationship with; and Ellie Burr, a youthful, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed local detective who idolizes Pacino's Dormer. As with all Nolan films, however, there's a catch, as Dormer slowly sinks into delirium due to the insomnia that he suffers while in Nightmute, thanks to the perpetual daylight there during the summer, as well as the guilt he suffers from an event that happens early on in the movie. Wrestling with both his sanity, his guilt over past actions, and the murderer of a dead teenage girl, Nolan sends Pacino's Dormer on a conflicted manhunt of Williams's Finch that sees Nolan experiment with action set pieces for the first time, while still exploring darker themes of morality and the blurred line of right and wrong. The countdown trio give their thoughts on the central trio of performances, how successful Nolan's first true action set pieces were, and whether the technical aspects of this film work as effectively as they might have in his previous film.
