Christmas Chiller season begins as Someone's Favorite Movie looks at Christmas horror movies.

This time, it's Black Christmas, a Canadian horror movie from 1974 that is a clear source of inspiration for slasher movies to come. In this episode, we talk about "the babysitter and the man upstairs" urban legend, how John Carpenter may have taken some inspiration for Halloween from this movie, and the upcoming Blumhouse remake of Black Christmas coming out on Friday the 13th. Don't worry. We also cover the 2006 remake, Black Xmas, and discuss how that movie got it all wrong.

Tammy and the T-Rex is a 1994 cult classic in which a murdered teen's brain (Paul Walker) is put inside a mechanical T-Rex body. It's up to his girlfriend (Denise Richards) to find him a new body or love him just the way he is. It's the first starring roles for Paul Walker and Denise Richards, so that's a fact to win your local bar trivia with. It's fun, it's ridiculous, it's worth listening to us laugh at it.

Tammy and the T-Rex is being released this Black Friday in an R-rated, "Gore" cut by Vinegar Syndrome.

Just think. You’re 3 years between movies…desperately waiting for The Empire Strikes Back…ravenous for more Star Wars content. Engaging in all sorts of hypothetical debates with your friends…you hear that there is going to be a Star Wars Holiday special and you anxiously count down the days to spend time with your favorite characters again.

And then…this is what you get.

The Star Wars Holiday Special aired only one time on November 17, 1978 and with good reason. The special features cameos from all of your favorite Star Wars characters, but mainly focuses on Chewbacca’s family. That’s right. The protagonists of your show are characters that can only roar and subtitles are not provided. Better brush up on your Wookiee language skills!

Trick or Treat is a horror movie from 1986 (not to be confused with 2007's Trick 'r Treat) starring Marc Price and Tony Field. Based on all the promotional materials for the movie, I guess I'm morally obligated to tell you that Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne are also in this movie, but only in small cameos.

Trick or Treat is about a teenage outcast named Eddie "The Ragman" who has just learned his metal idol, Sammi Curr has died in a fire under mysterious circumstances. After receiving Curr's last known recording as a gift from his friend, DJ Nuke (Gene Simmons), Ragman discovers that the record contains backmasking. When played backwards, the ghost of Sammi Curr talks to Eddie through the record and commands him to take revenge against his bullies. Yikes.

But is this movie a TRICK or is it a TREAT? Find out!

Ghostwatch was a British movie that traumatized an entire nation and mentally scarred young children for years to come.

Presented as a live news broadcast, Ghostwatch followed a group of reporters as they staked out an alleged haunted house in the hopes to find irrefutable evidence of ghosts. It was broadcast only once on BBC 1 on Halloween 1992, gaining an impressive audience of over 11 million viewers. The movie offered no disclaimers that it was a fictional account of a news broadcast and cast recognizable British TV personalities in the lead roles, further blurring the line between fact and fiction. It’s estimated that 30,000 calls were made to the “live” call-in number displayed on the screen during the show. If a caller was able to get through, a recorded message was played saying that the show was fictional and was not being broadcast live. Since the phone lines were jammed by the sheer volume of calls coming in all at once, not many callers were able to get through to receive this message. It’s not the first time that a work of fiction presented as a real news account caused panic or confusion.

On October 30 1938, Orson Welles narrated “War of the Worlds” by H.G. Wells in the style of a news report, complete with breaking news interruptions. The listener was told repeatedly that it was merely a reading of the science fiction classic, but the style of the broadcast seemed to cause confusion anyway. The theatrical interpretation began with: “Ladies and gentleman, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin. Martians have landed in New Jersey!” While the amount of alleged “panic in the streets” as a result of this radio program are probably more mythical than anything, Welles’ reading of “War of the Worlds” presented an original way to present fictional material.More recent attempts of this fact or fiction debate include 1995’s Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction. The show was rebroadcast several times, growing in ratings each time. The program presented video footage of a “real” medical autopsy of an alien corpse with special effects wizards and medical experts commenting on the validity of the autopsy’s authenticity. In 2012, another docufiction special titled “Mermaids: The Body Found” aired on Animal Planet and the Discovery channel. The show detailed the discovery of a strange aquatic form. It was a ratings hit and, apparently, fooled millions of people at the same time. Ghostwatch seemed to be an inspiration in other ways. The rise of “ghost hunting” reality shows with their use of night vision and thermal imaging cameras seem to owe a direct debt to this movie. Found footage films, which would become very popular in the years after the broadcast of Ghostwatch, seem to be the direct descendants of this movie. There are certainly a number of parallels that can be drawn between The Blair Witch Project and Ghostwatch.

Pipes the ghost (as named by the kids in the movie based on the knocking sound that he makes on the pipes in the house) makes brief appearances during Ghostwatch as a flicker on the screen or a reflection in the window. Fans of the movie are still searching for easter eggs, but the most recent count stands at 13 different appearances for Pipes. If you’re eager to play a Halloween-themed version of “Where’s Waldo?”, go ahead and look for Pipes while viewing Ghostwatch.

Braindead (or Dead Alive as it was known in America) is a romantic zombie comedy directed by Peter Jackson. Before hobbits, Lord of the Rings, and King Kongs, Peter Jackson made indie films that were not for the squeamish. Braindead was the final indie film that Jackson made before receiving mainstream attention with his shared nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the movie, Heavenly Creatures with his longtime writing partner, Fran Walsh.

Braindead has been described as a “splatstick” comedy, which is an appropriate title if there ever was one. The movie features gallons of blood, impressive practical horror effects, and a comedic tone that never allows things to get too serious.The movie follows Lionel, a devoted momma’s boy, who tries to start a love affair with a local shopkeeper named Paquita. A monkey wrench (no pun intended? Well….maybe) is thrown into the relationship when Lionel’s mother is bitten by a rare Sumatran rat monkey while spying on his son’s first date. When his mother starts to decay into a zombie right in front of him, Lionel has to wrestle with taking care of his undead mother and the chaos that she starts to cause while also trying to woo Paquita. It’s a movie with a sex scene between two zombies, a zombie baby (the post coital result of the aforementioned zombie union) that is like a drug-induced Loony Tunes nightmare, and more mommy issues than a 47 year old virgin. Jackson cowrote Braindead with Fran Walsh and Stephen Sinclair after collaborating with them on “Meet the Feebles.” Walsh would go on to become his long time writing partner and Sinclair would later cowrite “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” with Jackson and Walsh.As a bonus, Braindead has an unexpected crossover with King Kong. The Sumatran rat monkey is from Skull Island, the legendary home of King Kong. Look for an easter egg in the Jackson’s remake of King Kong featuring a wooden crate that says “Sumatran Rat Monkey—Beware the bite!”

Suburban Commando was a 1991 family-friendly comedy starring Hulk Hogan, Christopher Lloyd, and Shelly Duval. Hulk Hogan stars as Shep Ramsey, an intergalactic bounty hunter that seeks refugee on Earth after his space ship is damaged. Lessons are learned, characters grow, and mimes are hurt in gratuitous ways. It’s fun for the whole family!

Suburban Commando was Hulk Hogan’s attempt at mainstream movie stardom. After becoming an ‘80s pop culture icon and the biggest star that wrestling and WWF had produced up to that point (based largely on his appearance in Rocky III as Thunderlips), the next place that Hulkamania wanted to run wild on was your movie screens. No Holds Barred wasn’t the platform that provided that boost, so maybe a cameo in Gremlins 2: The New Batch and a family-oriented comedy featuring proven actors would help.

Just as Hogan paved the way for future wrestlers to transcend the square circle, did he also make the Hollywood transition easier for guys like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena?

If you’re a fan of vintage WWF or current WWE, it’s worth checking out this movie for the rare out-of-character performance from The Undertaker. The Dead Man plays a silent bounty hunter who is trying to capture Shep Ramsey…but this bounty hunter has a reason for his silence: he sounds like a baby when he talks. Fun for the whole family!

No Holds Barred was a 1989 movie produced by the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE...thanks World Wildlife Fund!). Vince McMahon's plan was to funnel the momentum of Hulkamania into Hollywood by turning Hulk Hogan into a movie star. 

It's the story of an unbeatable wrestling champion, Rip Thomas (Hogan), being blackmailed into taking on the human wrecking machine, Zeus.
