It only comes once a year -- and let's be thankful for that. In addition to classics from the likes of Yogi Yorgesson, Christmas Jugband, The Yid Kids, and The Three Weismen, Brother Bill rolled out some new holiday tunes from the likes of Sandy Rogers and I See Hawks In LA, Kevin Bacon and The Old 97's, and David DeBoy. Last week, we played a few sets of songs about coal mining. Then the folk music police saw our playlist and informed us that we needed to be more inclusive, so this week we've diversified a bit and included a few songs about hard rock miners too. But mostly more songs about coal from the likes of Jean Ritchie (pictured), Jez Lowe, Caroline Herring, Doc and Merle Watson, Merle Travis, and Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard.

On their debut album in 1968, a group of kids from the suburbs of north London covered a Richard Farina song about a city in Nevada. During the pandemic, a singer-songwriter from Edinburgh teamed up with musicians from Tucson. Sometime in between, a guitarist/mandolinist from Nashville became a founding member of a band of transatlantic musicians who play the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow every winter.
