For the past 51 years, opal miner John Dunstan has lived in the small desert town of Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy is an eight-hour drive from the nearest city and boasts the largest opal mine in the world.

To escape extreme desert temperatures, miners like John live in underground ‘dugouts’, or caves which are blasted out of the rocky hillsides.

Somewhere Else talks to John about what it’s like to live underground and if he ever gets claustrophobic.

Dolly moved to Australia in 2014 and after three years of living in Melbourne, she packed up and moved to the country to live in a tiny house. Robert Prudhoe, otherwise known as Boinga Bob, is 79 and lives in a treehouse he started building in 1992. After buying an old station masters house in Warburton, Victoria, Bob was inspired by different cultures and a lifetime of travel to create a truly unique home.

Now with the support of the local community, Bob’s home is a living piece of art and attracts visitors from all over the world.

When Jane Moughan heard there was a room available at an inner-Melbourne share house, she didn’t know she would be sharing the home with 13 others. Almost two years on, Jane’s housemates range from early 20s to early 40s, manage to share one huge kitchen and five bathrooms – and yes, they each have their own room.

When Perth couple Karina and Craig Waters hired a car and headed on a scenic drive towards the Pyrenees, they weren’t expecting to buy the 18th century, 94-room Chateau de Gudanes.

Six years on, Karina project-manages the restoration of the monument with help from a team of local tradespeople, while her daughter regularly updates their 300,000 followers.

Somewhere Else chats to Karina about her progress so far and finds out if it's really as glamorous as it looks.

Last Easter, Felix and his Swedish partner Emma decided to pack up their home and move into a school bus they've renovated on Victoria’s surf coast. The ‘Sandy Bus’ is now complete with French doors, parquetry floors, fireplace and fully-functioning kitchen – and to top it all off, they have a baby on the way.
