  • 027: (Mis)Adventures In Audiobooks

The underlying purpose of Sonitotum is to share my experiences as an experienced beginner making things, finding success, and staying healthy and sane, and hopefully, provide value through teachable moments.

That doesn’t mean it’s always easy to share the mistakes! Indeed, my ego and personal fragility almost convinced me to… under-represent… my most recent mis-steps.

    Almost.

Instead, in this episode, I talk about the long road I stumbled down in completing the audiobook edition of my latest novel, Light of the Outsider, including some pretty massive last-mile fumbles… and how I know better, and what I’ll do to avoid these errors in the future.

It’s all stuff I hope you can learn from, and, heck, probably get a bit of a laugh out of in the process.

            • Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick 023: Ask Me Anything (Part 2 of 2)

It’s time for the second part (of two) of the “ask me anything” here on Sonitotum! You can find part one here. This time, I finish answering the remaining three questions submitted by Rebecca Burns.

              The Questions
              1. What is your experience with writing groups? Critique groups? Collaborative projects?
              2. When you’ve coached other artists, what revelations have you had or advice have you given that surprised you (like, “Why had I never thought of this before?” or “I wish someone had told me this 10 years ago!”
              3. How much of your creative energy is spent on your own writing vs. your music vs. helping other artists and how much energy do you spend on non-creative activities? Is this the right balance for you? If not, how would you wish to distribute your energy?
              4. Listen to the episode for my answers!

Have questions of your own for future episodes? Submit them any time! The easiest way is to simply comment on this episode.

                • 022: Ask Me Anything (Part 1 of 2)

This episode of Sonitotum features my answers to questions asked by listeners — what the online folk call an “AMA” (Ask Me Anything). You know I tend to be long-winded, so of the six questions submitted, this episode covers three. Stay tuned for the other three in episode twenty three… you might want to subscribe so you don’t miss it!

                  The Questions
                  1. Rebecca Burns asked, “Have any of your story characters been influenced by real-life people (friends, enemies, colleagues, family, authors, politicians, actors, etc)–if so, who, how, and why? (and do they know or is it a secret homage?)”
                  2. J. C. Hutchins asked, “What is your process for crafting believable, relatable characters in your fiction?”
                  3. Rebecca also asked, “Who is your biggest cheerleader? Who encourages you to persevere as an artist?”

                    • 021: The Squirrel Trappers Ruin Everything

This outdoor episode features an update on the Amazon advertising experiment I started about a month before, some news about progress on my upcoming novella set in the same storyworld as my novel Light of the Outsider, my secret plan to fight inflation tips on how to get away from Facebook when you can’t leave Facebook, and… yeah, there’s also some ranting about… some things.

When all was said and done, no squirrels were trapped or otherwise harmed during the recording of this episode… but… real talk, dear listener… I’m not in the best headspace in this one.

Despite that, or maybe because of that, there’s still plenty of value for your ears. I really do try to teach and share through the bitching and grousing.

Another (parked) car-cast episode of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick! This time, I’ve got the lav mic going into my smartphone via the HD Audio Recorder app (which I suddenly can’t find in the Google Play store, making me wonder if it’s some kind of horrible malware and I didn’t know… ah well; works great!)

Anyway, there’s some wind noise and a little background randomness, but I think you’ll find the audio quality is much improved.

This episode, I share some dreams I’ve had lately, and what they might be trying to tell me about my mental health, especially with regard to my creative practice. It comes down to finding a metaphorical safe space to make things… perhaps.
