Following the opening and introductory comments to the book of Hebrews, the Holy Spirit brings us to an emphatic point, that Christ is greater than the angels. This is the subject from Hebrews 1:4-2:18. The majority of the first two chapters of this letter to Jewish Christians has this divine emphasis. But why? 

The book of Hebrews shows us that Christianity is spiritual, it is just a legislative, detached, and mental religion of just knowing the right things, saying the right things, and believing the right things. It is knowing God and His Son through the power of the Holy Spirit where are lives are transformed. The implications of this experience in Christ plays the primary role in how our own sanctification works and also how we understand church unity in our modern Christian setting in the United States.

The apostles told the primitive churches in that first generation of Christians of the importance of holding fast to the gospel. Both Paul and Peter in their farewell address, in their final letters that we have on record, tell the churches to hold fast to the gospel of Christ and commit this message to the churches. 

The book of Hebrews details for us the excellency, the far superior excellency of Christ as the Son of God. The Son came with an unparalleled message. The book of Hebrews also tells us that we not only have the range of understanding that looking forward we have hope in Christ, but even looking backwards, we see that even the world was made through him. Through and through, the message of the gospel in either direction points us to Christ and his unique position as the Son of God.

The book of Hebrews is truly a Christ-exalting revelation of Scripture.

The book of Hebrews exalts the person of Jesus and points us to the future right from its opening. We are told in no uncertain terms of the absolute supremacy of Christ and that the coming age is soon to arrive of which Christ as the Son is the heir of all things. 

The letter to the Hebrews speaks to us today and brings clarity to the central focus of the gospel, Christ himself. 

We must maintain this forward-looking perspective as we set our eyes on Jesus and endure to the end with the faith that we have received in Christ.
