When Michael Greger was a child, his grandmother became one of the first people in the country to be cured of severe heart disease by a revolutionary new program that used as it's primary weapon something few scientists or researchers were considering at the time -- food. From nearly dead to walking 10 miles a day in just a few weeks, the treatment gave another 31 years of life to a grandmother of six children. With his foundational understanding of the world shaped around the power of food to heal, it is no wonder that he has become one of the top research and data experts in the world when it comes to nutritional research. In this cast, he discusses the quantity and quality of research that he considers golden for his website NutritionFacts.org. With his typical dry humor, he declares that he has no opinion on anything, but only relays the facts. "If tomorrow science showed foie gras covered veal was the healthiest food, that's what I'd report..."
Then we have a short conversation with East End Food Co-op General Manager Justin Pizzella about an event coming up Oct 18 at CMU. Know Your GMOs is a free event with presentations and a panel discussion with Denise Caruso, a CMU researcher and author, Trevett Hooper, Owner and Chef of Legume in Oakland, and Bryan Petrak, R&D Director of NuGo Nutrition. Pizzella discusses the issues around GMOs, from lack of research, to problems with sourcing for food stores, restaurants and processed foot products.
