Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesdays & Fridays)

Listen Later

The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary focus on the suffering and passion of Jesus Christ. These mysteries are typically prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays, as well as on Sundays during the season of Lent. They invite reflection on Christ’s deep love and sacrifice for humanity through His suffering and death. There are five Sorrowful Mysteries:

1. The Agony in the Garden

This mystery recalls Jesus’ intense prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before His crucifixion. As He faced the impending suffering, He prayed to His Father, asking if the cup of suffering could pass from Him, yet submitted fully to God’s will (Matthew 26:36-46). His sorrow was so profound that He sweat drops of blood.

2. The Scourging at the Pillar

This mystery reflects on the brutal scourging of Jesus, where He was whipped by Roman soldiers after being handed over by Pontius Pilate (John 19:1). The soldiers cruelly beat Him, inflicting tremendous pain on His body.

3. The Crowning with Thorns

In this mystery, Jesus is mocked by the Roman soldiers. They place a crown of thorns on His head, dress Him in a purple robe, and sarcastically hail Him as the “King of the Jews” (Matthew 27:29). The sharp thorns pierced His head, causing additional suffering and humiliation.

4. The Carrying of the Cross

This mystery focuses on Jesus carrying His heavy cross to the place of His crucifixion, Calvary (John 19:17). Along the way, He falls multiple times under the weight of the cross, but continues toward His death, showing His perseverance in fulfilling God’s plan of salvation.

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

This final Sorrowful Mystery commemorates Jesus’ crucifixion on Mount Calvary, where He was nailed to the cross and suffered a slow, agonizing death (Luke 23:33-46). As He hung on the cross, Jesus spoke words of forgiveness and mercy, offering His life as a ransom for many.

These mysteries invite deep reflection on the profound suffering that Jesus endured out of love for humanity, reminding believers of the cost of redemption and the depth of Christ’s love.
