Soul Circle Radio Mix Series Vol.29

I started making music at the age of 7. I first learned to play the violin and classical guitar the first 9 years when I was in music school. After that I started playing jazz on guitar and bass. At 16, I began following the whole trip hop movement with influences from Massive Attack and Portishead. This was what led me into making music.

Later, I kept on opening my head with beats by J Dilla, Madlib, Flying Lotus. I like to blend my jazz and classical background into my music by constructing harmonies and melodies as well as experimenting with the macro structures of entire albums.

My last release "Syd" includes all of those things as well as introducing inspiration from my African heritage. Having a Congolese father, a Polish mother and spending the last 6 years in Scandinavia really pushed me to blend all those cultures together in a 16 track long piece. For the 29th installment of SCR Mix Series, I included discoveries from the beat scene and blended in two tracks from my older releases. Those tracks go along my musical road and remind me of the necessity of being up to date with what is happening around the world, because there is so much good music out there.

​My Story:

I started DJing over 20 years ago, beginning with Jungle at the tail end of the UK rave boom and quickly moving on Hip Hop and other downtempo "beats" music. Discovering sample sources lead me towards Funk, Soul and Disco. I got a job in a record store for a few years after I graduated university and that’s when I saved up my money and bought studio gear and began DJing seriously out in clubs. My main love is still Hip Hop, as you can probably hear from my mix - even when mixing other styles like House, I like to cut tracks in quickly, rather than doing smooth blends. Over the years, i’ve released on Ninja Tune, Tru Thoughts, Wah Wah 45s, Sony and many other labels, but now I release on my own label - Press Something Play Something. - Titeknots

​We’re in the middle of a hot, dry spell here in the UK. It hasn’t rained properly for over a month, which is very unusual. So I pulled out records for the mix that feel good in the sunshine, but aren’t too hectic, to avoid overheating. It’s grown up party music, leaning heavily towards Disco, but including Hip Hop, Soul and House too. It’s mixed live with 2 turntables, a mixer and a delay unit and then slightly edited afterwards to cut out some of the more repetitive sections of some tracks and get the overall mix length down.

Straight off the success of his highly acclaimed release "Depth of Madness" (Paxico Records), we had the honors in having LA native, jazz pianist, singer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist, Moki Kawaguchi aka Lionmilk on for his SCR debut.

Lionmilk is Moki Kawaguchi: 24-year-old jazz pianist, singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist. A native of Hollyweird, he takes after all its decaying glamour and peeling paints, contending with an aesthetic of deterioration. With his 3rd project DEPTHS OF MADNESS, he performs cathexis of his own crumbling mind, arranging sonic hallucinations, eviscerating time and dreaming through nimble keys, gleefully detached from waking life. Its narrative follows a quixotic maestro who wrestles with tangled feelings and bouts of longing. Dredges nightmares from the unknown and reaches toward infinities: the forever, the beyond, the blue.

In the wake of chaos he also reminds us of all that he's lost in pursuing delirium to its ends. We find a soul caught between hope for recovery and the fear that it might never know a moment's repose.

With a vastly eclectic musical vernacular he combines elements of oddball tropicalia, bossa jazz, blistering metal doom-scapes and melancholy stoner rock. Take the dive to reemerge in a heightened state of consciousness- this is a work that is euphoric, uncanny, intense and brilliant.

Record connoisseur and collector, music lover and historian, Louis Flores, better known as “BreakBeat Lou,” is a staple and legend in the music and entertainment industry. As a disc jockey and music producer, Breakbeat Lou is most recognized for creating “The Ultimate Breaks and Beats” Compilation with the Leonard “BreakBeat Lenny” Roberts. This seminal series has been sampled by many of hip-hop’s elite producers like DJ Premier (Gangstarr), Large Professor, The Bomb Squad (Public Enemy), Dr. Dre, Marley Marl and countless others. The series has been instrumental in the production of countless classic recordings over the years. Contemporary producers such as J Dilla, Salaam Remi, Rhettmatic, Mr. Len, Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez and Just Blaze continue to depend on the compilation. Flores’ work with UBB became the blueprint for sampled music and remains relevant and integral to hip-hop music and culture. The UBB Collection has also birthed various genres of music such as Drum & Bass. As a DJ, Breakbeat Lou has shared the stage with the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, KOOL DJ Red Alert, GrandWizzard Theodore, Biz Markie, Todd Terry, Rich Medina, Q-Bert, Lord Finesse, Boogie Blind, DJ Scratch and countless others. He has rocked from intimate club venues to festival stages, including Soundset Festival in Minneapolis, MN and the A3C Conference in Atlanta, GA. SCR Mix Series Vol.27 - C.SN

C.SN has curated a mix of some of his favorite new and old Jazz-Funk Vocoder and Talkbox songs. These songs have been inspirations for his upcoming EP "Parallel Disguise" which features C.SN covering classic tunes on Vocoder and Talkbox. This mix ultimately is a dedication to Herbie Hancock's iconic Vocoder and Roger Troutman's signature Talkbox, which really has influenced so many other great artist to experiment with this technology.

C.SN will release one song from "Parallel Disguise" per week from June 8th until all 5 songs will be out on July 6th, 2018. You can find "Parallel Disguise" on all digital platforms.
