SOUL OF SYDNEY Feel-Good FUNK RADIO

Detroit's Gospel Godfather DJ Terrence Parker lays down a high-energy dose of Disco, Funk, Gospel House and Soulful House flavours on Inspirational House Radio Show #82, recorded in 2008. One of the most celebrated DJs and producers to ever emerge from Detroit, Terrence Parker blends deep soulful grooves, classic Garage energy, rare Funk and Disco edits, and uplifting Gospel-infused House music into a seamless 80-minute journey that still sounds as powerful today as it did back then.

Streaming on Soul of Sydney Radio as part of our ongoing mission to celebrate the legends who shaped the sound we love. We toured Terrence Parker twice back in the day and this man never disappointed — a crafty selector, a skilled scratch DJ, and a gifted producer who uplifts every room he plays. This 2008 archive set from his Inspirational House Show is a masterclass in feel-good dance floor energy, featuring high-powered Disco and Funk vibes alongside his signature House joints. We'd love to bring him back to Sydney.

About DJ Seb One.

In the winter of 2011, he was pulled away from the bar in a downtown Sydney watering hole. The following phrase, spoken urgently, would set the next three years in motion.

“Hey, I’ve got to go rehearse for a dance showcase, cover the booth for the next hour and a half.”

Things have come a long way for Seb One since that night of frantic under the booth googling on an iPhone 3GS, “Scratch Live Instruction Manual."

Since then he has opened for the prestigious Dancekool Volume annual hiphop festival/competition alongside such notaries as DJ Matt Fernandez and DJ Naiki and has proven himself capable of supplying the backbone for dance battles of all styles in Sydney. Among those Seb One has had the honour of playing for include notable hiphop personalities Buddha Stretch and Loose Joint (Elite Force, NYC), B-Boy Y-not (Rock Steady Crew, NYC) B-Boy Physicx (Rivers Crew, Korea), Kumari Suraj (The Waackers) and Mamson (Wanted Posse, France). Bridging his love of music and food he further supplied the beats section of the Good Food Month "Bagels, Beer and Beats,” at Helm Bar, an event jointly held by Helm Bar and Brooklyn Boy Bagels. More recently Seb One partnered with Red Bull to provide the VIP foyer pre-show entertainment for the Sydney leg of the Rihanna tour.

Among his other pursuits he is a semi-active photojournalist and acts as Dancekool Studio’s Systems Technician. Acknowledging the need for a strong foundation in today’s budding talent and in order to give back to the community he grew from, he also assists DJ Naiki in a DJ course/workshop held at Dancekool premises.

Seb One currently reps the 319 as well as his personal philosophy, >1 (greater than).

ABOUT TERRENCE PARKER

▔▔

Detroit has been credited as one of the Soul Music capitals of the world, spawning legendary artists like The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross just to name a few. In the mid 1980s, Detroit's Underground Music Movement has brought rise to artists such as Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Blake Baxter, Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes, UR, Jeff Mills, and a host of others. But unlike the aforesaid names, Terrence Parker has established himself as a producer, remixer and DJ of the classic sound of 'Detroit House Music', and is known as the pioneer of the music genre known as “Inspirational House Music”! As a DJ, Terrence Parker (known to many as "TP") has become legendary for his quite uncommon yet skillful turntablism style of playing House Music.

TP has also become widely admired because he uses an actual telephone handset as headphones; causing some to give him the nick name, "Telephone Man". Others call him the "Telephone Man" because he has answered the CALL to bring us music to feed our souls! TP has performed as a DJ in 27 countries (more than 200 hundred cities) throughout the world.

Our good friend DANNY DE SOUSA sent us this Christmas mix back in 2014 featuring Summer inspired SOUL & FUNK goodness that you are just going to LOVE. For anyone who hasn't heard his mixes, this dude is one of the most versatile DJ's in Sydney. We met many years ago when he was a regular DJ at SHE (Soulful House Experience) parties that we used to go to over 10 years ago & we have stayed fans (and friends) ever since.

He plays everything from Soulful House, Disco, Jazz, Latin in his live sets & his killer podcast and has been doing his thing for over 15 years around Sydney.

Check out more of his mixes which we have featured on our pages for an idea of what one of these cities the finest selectors is feeling and be sure to catch him holding it down at a Soul of Sydney jam or around town soon.

ABOUT NICK CARATGOLD //

After getting busy as an MC back in the early 2000′s in and around Canberra ACT my crew at the time ALIKEMINDS supported any and all big hiphop acts that came to town (Jungle Brothers, Braintax/Mystro, Bliss & Esso, Lyrical Commission the list goe’s on) With some of the most raw and talented Mc’s around such as Anton, Audible and the new renown Maggot Mouf (Broken Tooth Melbourne) and Canberra’s very own Dj Buick 3x DMC Champ, we tore up the local Battle scenes and generally represented. Sadly people had to go places and the crew never released any official EP. But the name Caratgold continued as a passionate producer and part time Mc. Now residing in Sydney i carry the torch forward as a local Soul/Funk/HipHop Dj and Beatmaker.
