It was just over 100 years ago that women were legally allowed to own property in the west. For thousands of years prior, only men could receive money directly. Women could only access money through a man.

The subconscious beliefs this created continue to impact relationships today, especially when one person is the primary “breadwinner.” Unequal power dynamics can easily be created when one person is the “authority” around money, and the other has to ask for permission to do what they want. Yet, relying on a partner financially is not the same as codependency when both people enter the agreement consciously.

Recently I have heard several people say they’re not interested in dating because they don’t “need” a partner. The comment represents the (old, often subconscious) belief that relationships are founded on need, not desire.

You’re not supposed to “need” a relationship. The very word indicates codependent patterns within oneself.

Need indicates lack.

Desire comes from a place of fullness.
