In this video, we explore the concept of Soulaan and its connection to ethnic dysmorphia among African and Caribbean immigrants as they navigate their identities in the United States. Many members of the diaspora feel pressured to conform to the cultural identity of Native Black Americans, often leading to the erasure of their own distinct heritages. We break down the historical and social factors behind this phenomenon, the impact on cultural identity, and the tensions it creates. Finally, we discuss ways to embrace the rich diversity within Blackness without resorting to cultural assimilation.
