And so this is Christmas...and what have we done? We've set our fact finding trio onto some festive favorites.  

Under the Christmas micoscope this episode are .. 

Scrooged - Bill Murray got the full Christmas Carol experience in this Christmas classic but if you had someone who you needed to change could give them the three ghost treatment using science? You'll find out..

Elf - Will Farrell's loveable Buddy became a household favorite with this yuletide fish out of water story but were his wild claims of spreading Christmas Cheer to help Santa fly accurate? Well the answer's may surprise you!

On this episode of Sound in Space things are getting a little weird as our trio look at the science behind body horror movies and , as you do, in particular - movies where someone gets turned into an animal / insect against their will because…well we’ve already done time travel. 

However , is there more science in these schlock horrors than we’re expecting? Emmm..

First up under the microscope is 

The Fly - David Cronenberg’s  1986 insect starring horror is  genuine classic which saw Jeff Goldblum slowly change from Seth Brundle into BrundleFly after messing around with his new teleportation invention but is it possible to mix human genes with anything else ? If so, why would we do it? And what are the changes of coming up the telepods in the first place 

and then 

Tusk - Kevin Smith went from comic books and clerks to using his podcast army to create a horror where an annoying podcast host is held against his will and turned into a Walrus but could one really do that? Is this the movie that finally breaks Barry? And if annoying podcasters are targets will the next episode of Sound of Space be completely in Wallrus grunts?

 We chat the differences between asteroids and comets, the chances of one of them hitting earth and frankly most importantly, what’s the plan if that happens.

Greenland - The surprise hit of lock down that saw Gerard Butler attempt to keep his family safe by legging it to Greenland where the governments of the earth have gone full Noah and built an end of the world Ark - but , how realistic is this plan and if that is what would happen.. what could you do to get on the ark ?

Armageddon - Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck take on an asteroid because astronauts don’t know jack about drilling , but how realistic is this plan? Right we all know..not very but sure look , Jason Issacs was cool in it wasn’t he? Anyway..Armageddon

District 9 - Neil Blonkamp’s allegorical alien tale showed us a world where twenty years after arriving on earth visitors from another planet live in slum like conditions are about to be moved into direct provision. But do our trio think this is what would happen if aliens arrived tomorrow? Plus could a fuel actually change someone’s DNA?

 Mars Attacks! - In 1996 Tim Burton took on Independence Day in a battle of the invasions with one but two Jack Nicholson but how accurate is this zany Pierce Brosnan as a dog tale? Plus could alien invaders really be beaten by a number one hit? 

 

 Plus a reaction to the recent declassified files and the tricky fact of calling up an alien for a chat.

Independence Day - In 1996 we did not go quietly into the night when the flying saucers arrived and started blowing up white houses like there was no tomorrow. But in a world where Jeff Goldbulm is only just a beloved actor how would we fare if aliens set on destruction came for a visit ? 

Plus carbon based chat, the gamble of calling the movie Independence Day and not changing a thing even though you know it’s not going to end well

This week on Sound In Space we’re putting ghosts against scientists as we chat all things ghostly which means we’re off to a fire house in New York.

Ghostbusters - The classic from 1984 is considered one of the greatest comedies from all time and even changed the rules of film making. This tale of three scientists busting what goes bump in the night will live forever but how does the science hold up in the real world? 

Ghostbusters 2 - The Ghostbusters returned in this..less loved sequel but as Marshmallow Men went out, haunted paintings and even more science came in..but this science as scary as the ghosts? 

All this plus the science of Proton Packs, some spooky stories and Challenge Barry.

This week on Sound In Space we’re going back to issue one with a trio of superhero origin stories. 

Under the microscope this week are 

Ant-Man - In 2015 the quick handed Scott Land stole all our hearts when he became Marvel’s smallest superhero Ant-Man. A movie heavy on the science behind his shrinking but what are the chances of this happening in the real world? Plus could you actually talk to Ants? 

Unbreakable - M. Night Shyamalan cemented his reputation as king of the twists when he reteamed with Bruce Willis as the rather unbreakable David Dunn but is his super immune system science fiction or could you be lifting weights like a contestant on Love Island.

And finally - Intro The Spider-Verse - A comic book jumped off the screen in 2018 with the incredible Intro The Spider-Verse which saw Miles Morales team up with a heap of Spider-People and pigs in this story which taught us anyone could be a hero. But how many of Miles’s new powers can past the Barry Test?

12 Monkeys - Bruce Willis goes back to 1996 in order to stop a pandemic and help Brad Pitt get nominated for an Oscar but just in off chance chance one of those was around the corner would his plan work in the real world?

Groundhog Day - Speaking of pandemics Bill Murray gave us a sneak peek at the year 2020 when he was forced to live the same day over end over again in all time classic Groundhog Day but would a time loop ever be possible and is there an even more important lesson in this film?

And finally - The Time Traveler's Wife - Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams are a couple in need of some marriage counselling in this time spanning romance but what was the cause of our time traveler’s time hopping and was someone being a bit naughty ?

All this and the gang look at some real life time travel and figure out some slightly .. different ways to use it.
