I had an opening in mind for this week’s edition of the newsletter, but as I was sitting down to write it I received some pretty juicy family news and had to step away to share with my spouse. When I came back, the “real” opening I had was gone and this is what remained. Why do I admit this to you? Because I think it’s important to remember that Sound Sorceresses is one part of a very full life and that we all have responsibilities to ourselves outside of our work.

As we continue to “move and grove” toward July 1, I have a question for you. How do you feel about AI-generated images? So far the art in the magazine, except for the wonderful cover by Kate Rance, has been sourced from Unsplash but I’ve been playing with AI-generated images. Mostly, my spouse and I have been using it as a tool to help our kids have a visual of the fantastical visions in their heads. How would you feel about that type of art in the magazine? I literally could not be more thrilled to start showcasing the incredible writers and storytellers that will be joining the Sound Sorceresses community in July! This entire edition is all about showing up as you are and using the priviledge you have to shine a light on injustice.

As May unfolds, we have the chance to honor mothers, a celebration often filled with warmth and joy. Yet, it's essential to recognize that Mother's Day can evoke a spectrum of emotions, acknowledging the diverse experiences within our community. This newsletter opens with this awareness, understanding of the complexities that this occasion may hold for many of us.

As we transition from the April 2024 magazine to the upcoming July 2024 edition, it's important to shine a spotlight on the talented women who have contributed to our past editions. Their work deserves recognition as we eagerly anticipate the assembly of the next magazine behind the scenes.

Welcome to the first newsletter of May! At this point, I imagine most of you know that my full-time job is in public higher education. It is with that lens that I say, the roll toward the end of the semester has been slow and maybe just a little painful. As a person who was raised in the Mormon church, I have an arsenol of Sunday School songs that I can recall on command - even several all about the pioneers colonizing the West. One such song goes “Here comes the ox cart, oh how slow. . . creak creak creak creak is their song”, and I think this refrain is somewhat fitting for where I’m sitting.

There are still some January authors who deserve a ton of attention and I’m thrilled to be highlighting M. Cristina Marras and Angela Mason in this edition of the newsletter.

I am a woman of a certain age so I’m going to open by saying, no - the title of this edition of the newsletter isn’t an announcement that I’m pregnant. It is an homage to the January 2024 authors, Flloyd Kennedy and Kris Keppeler who are going to be highlighted here.

Possibly not shocking, there’s also going to be an ask at the end but I promise it’s not too onerus!
