Sound the Foghorn

The Minnesota Wild are off to a dreadful 0-3-0 start that’s included horrific defense and goaltending resulting in 20 goals against. Brett, Zeke, and Justin talk through what’s been missing for the Wild including  untimely soft goals, a poor penalty kill, inconsistent line combinations, and not playing with the lead or with a tied score.

Once they get through negatives, they dive into some of the positive takeaways from the first couple of games: Matt Boldy’s strong start, Calen Addison’s seamless transition to the first power play unit and that unit’s success, what the underlying stats say about the Wild’s game plan, and they take a took a look ahead at the next 3 games and how healthy bodies coming back should lead to a spark.

As the offseason comes to a lull, so does Minnesota Wild news. We briefly discuss Kirill Kaprizov's return and which prospects to keep an eye at the World Juniors before putting on our commissioner hats and discussing new rules we would propose to owners/GMs that we think would make the NHL better. Be sure to share your ideas for new rules with us on Twitter!

A lot happened in the last five days including Kirill Kaprizov drama in Russia, extensions for Jake Middleton & Marc-Andre Fleury, Cam Talbot drama, the entry draft, oh and free agency starts on Wednesday at 11am too.

We discussed what's going with Kaprizov: what we know, and what we think is next. We then moved on to discuss the contract extensions and the reaction from Talbot and his agent before finally discussing a few players the Wild could target when Free Agency opens this week.

We wrap up with the meat and potatoes of the show recapping another stellar draft from Judd Brackett and Bill Guerin that included Liam Öhgren, Danila Yurov, Hunter Haight, Rieger Lorenz, Mikey Milne, Ryan Healey, David Spacek, and Servác Petrovský. We gave our full breakdowns on each player and where we project them in the lineup once they reach their primes.

Our complete analysis on the Minnesota Wild's latest trade that sent Kevin Fiala to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for RD Brock Faber and the 2022 19th overall pick. We talk about the fairness of the deal, what Faber can bring to the Wild organization and the implication of adding a 7th defense prospect pool means for the Wild now and in the future.

After that conversation, we put on our GM hats and discuss what moves Bill Guerin still has to make this offseason. Points of discussion include goaltending (Talbot + Fleury or a John Gibson Trade), defense (extending Jake Middleton, exploring the Dmitry Kulikov trade market, and sending Matt Dumba to Buffalo), and forwards (what to do with Tyson Jost and Nic Deslauriers).

Be sure to check out the pinned thread on our Twitter account to get your votes in for the Sound the Foghorn Awards! Polls close at 6pm CT on Thursday, June 30.
