Sound Threads

Discuss Music: This morning I'll look at some reasons I enjoyed Freddie Mercury's music so much. For me, he ranks way high on the songwriting and performance scale. Play a Song: My song for today is called Second Time. It's a song I wrote about making up after a lover's spat. The protagonist in the song is one happy guy. Tell a Story: And when I check in on our story, Freddie (not the same one!) has one prized possession in his apartment.

Discuss Music: Some of the great musicians are able to lend little "touches" that help make a song stand out. I'll talk about that this morning. Play a Song: My song today is called "I Was There". Of the songs I have written, this one is one is a favorite, due to the subject matter. It's written about the great accomplishments of mankind. Tell a Story: And today in the Musical World of Freddie Spaghetti, we look at the small town of Cherry Creek-the place he is from.

Discuss Music: This morning I'll look at the great songwriter, Dolly Parton. Her prolific and chart-topping hits would make her one of our great all-time songwriters. Play a Song: I'll play my song Make it Monday. I wrote Make it Monday to provide a counter viewpoint of the first day of the work week, and its lead in serves as Sound Threads entry theme song. Tell a Story: Today, we look at Freddie Spaghetti's family, and his love of music.

Discuss Music: This morning I'll discuss the songwriting of Brian Wilson Beach Boys, and in particular his song God Only Knows. Later on in the show, Play a Song: I'll play my song Scattered. Its a humorous look at becoming discombobulated when you are under stress. Tell a Story: In our music story, we meet Mr. Fred Barton Junior.

Discuss Music: In today's discussion I look at types of songwriters, and some examples of the greats who were able to master the two sides of the songwriting coin. Play a Song: Today's song is titled The Trade-its about a man looking to sell his soul in order to play guitar. Tell a Story: And today, we are introducing our story. It is a fictional account of a musician who rises from obscurity and gains stardom. This morning, we meet the players in the Musical Life of "Freddie Spaghetti".

The music and songwriting I do today, represents my second foray into music. As a teenager and part of a Toronto-based music group the "Voyageurs", I was fortunate to play at some iconic venues including Massey Hall, the Grand Ole Opry (Ryman), and others. In 1967, I put the guitar away to continue my education. This eventually led to a career in market research and advertising, and building my business. The music was never far away however, and by the early 2000's, I began songwriting, visiting Nashville for IBMA conferences, and building a music studio to record in

The music industry of today is dramatically different from the one I left 'back in the day'. That changeover is fascinating, and the subject of some of my shows later on the Sound Threads series.

This is the initial show for my Podcast Sound Threads. Its a short one at only three and a half minutes long, but since Sound Threads is unique from other shows, I thought it required an introduction.

Each week, Sound Threads will look at music from three angles. First, I'll look at the larger picture such as music's very earliest beginnings. I'll cover some great artists and songwriting, and later in on, I'll take a look in depth at the music industry of today. In the second part of the show, I'll play one of my acoustic country songs. And thirdly each show will follow a story about a musician as he rises from obscurity, and gains fame and fortune. Hope you will join me each week for Sound Threads
